  • Hi
Unfortunately most distance learning courses are structured as Loans and you will have signed up to a loan with a payment period of say, 36 months at £35 per month. The loans are through a finance company connected with the distance college.
You may be able to change to a different course if you have lost interest in the one you signed up to, or you may be able to assign the course to another family member who will benefit from it, if you discuss this with the college. However, you will have to pay. You can't just stop paying because you don't feel like it or have lost interest in the course - it is a binding finance agreement.

You will have signed an agreement with the college to do the course and since they have enrolled you and sent out the books for it they have kept to their side of it. You need to speak to them and see if they will let you change to another course or maybe give you credit for something in the future but since you are probably now classed as having 'started' the course I doubt you will get the money back.

Hi Just been reading this post and I too need help with the same query. In 2007 I signed up to a Home Learning college course under the agreement that the money would be takem from my account by direct debit each month. At the time a few things happened which meant i did not time to do the course however, I did not receive any correspondence from the Home Learning college and no money was ever taken from my account.

In 2009 I received a letter to say that I owed the company £2000.00 plus. I wrote to them by email advising that the course was never done and they broke their agreement as they did not contact me nor debit any money from my account as agreed.

They sent me an email to say that they would start the course again but never sent a new agreement to me. Since then I tried to start the course settled down with my books and tried to log into Home Learning college online account from the email they had sent me, and could not log in. I sent an email to the address to say that I couldnt log in and never received a reply, a month passed and tried contacting them again.....nothing. Another month or so passed and I trawled through their website and found a contact number which I called to be told that my account had not even been activated, bearing in mind that I had been making my regular payments.

I am so frustrated with this company and no longer want to do this course, I feel like I am paying thousands for some books to sit in my house and collect dust!!

I have contacted them and told them I am not happy and did not get much of a reply. I have since stopped paying any money and the company is quick to contact you for their money but not for any kind of assistance.

Does anyone know where I stand on this matter? Do I have the right to cancel since no new credit agreement was sent or signed? This whole matter is really stressing me out and I need every penny now as I am pregnant and just want this resolve once and for all.

    Any help would be appreciated.
