its quite some distance away, (the other end of the town), and right out of the town centre. Your best bet will probably be a taxi at around £15. Try Blue Line Taxis when you arrive, they are a big firm, and a lot cheaper than the NODA taxis that will be outside the station.

Shopping wise, Northumberland Street is a long pedestrianised street with most of the large retailers, and Eldon Square shopping centre is immediately next to Northumberland Street as well. Shopping wise should keep you busy for at least the full morning. Northumberland Street is within easy walking distance of Central Station.

Walker taxis are cheaper than Blue Line. You haven't picked the best hotel for going to the centre. You could take the bus if you wanted, or a combination of bus and Metro.

For the bus, you'd need to get to Haymarket Bus Station which is about 10 or 15 minutes away from Central Station and look for a bus stopping at Gosforth Park. Arriva buses use that station and almost every bus they have stops near that hotel as they all run north of the city.

For the Metro+bus. Go into Central Station Metro (accessed directly from the actual mainline station concourse) and buy a ticket from a machine (I think it'll be a 2 zone ticket you'll need) or buy a transfare which you can use on the bus once you get off. Take the Metro to Regent Centre which is a few stops up the line. You'll need to get a Metro that says 'Airport' on the front, and not 'The Coast' or 'St James'. From Regent Centre there is a smaller bus station, and again, almost every bus going north will stop at the Marriott/Gosforth Park but the bus stop signs and electronic boards are easy to use. Bus numbers in the 40s (40, 42, 43, 45 etc.) go to the hotel. Make sure you get on a green bus ran by Arriva.

Is Six the restaurant in the Baltic? For this you want to be back in the centre so either taxi or follow the reverse of the above instructions. Get off the bus at Haymarket (it'll be the last stop anyway) or get off the metro at Monument. From Monument, look for 'Grey Street Exit' and simply walk straight ahead. You go right down the hill to the quayside and you just walk over the Millennium Bridge and you're in front of the Baltic. If you get the bus to Haymarket, you'll be able to get another bus, Q1 or Q2 (a single is about £1.50 I think) which will take you to right outside the Baltic. This bus also stops on Grey Street so if you get the Metro, this bus is still an option.

Shopping; as d123 says, Northumberland Street is the main road for shops. Eldon Square is right next to it with the likes of Debenhams, Apple, M&S, Fenwick, John Lewis, Topshop etc. M&S and Fenwick both have entrances on Northumberland Street too.

You could also have a walk around the Quayside. You can walk into the Sage and have a look in the theatre rooms if nothing is on and just meander about. Then you could go for your tea at Six. Leazes Park and Exhibiton Park are nice too. These are signposted from the centre. Leazes Park is behind the football stadium and Exhibition is behind Newcastle University.

If you take the Metro for both of these journeys, you might as well go for a day ticket, and then you could always take a trip to the beach. It's only about 30 minutes on the Metro. Choose between Tynemouth, Cullercoats or Whitley Bay. The beaches are lovely and the towns themselves are nice. Tynemouth has an old priory as well. Or there's a lighthouse at Whitley Bay.
