Trying to leave my joint mortgage

I split from my partner of 17 years at the beginning of last year because he had been cheating on me for 2 years. I moved out of our house because he wouldnt and have been renting now for 12mths. I am wanting to buy my own house but are unable because I am still on the old mortgage yet he is living there with his girlfriend who moved in when i left and again it is me that is suffering. He says he has applied to take the mortgage on in his own name which was turned down even though he can afford it and there is now 2 of them paying their bills. I am struggling on my own but cant see any way forward. Is there something legally i can do to remove me from the mortgage. HELP PLEASE
