Restaurant with a good range of gluten free options

My Dad is coming to stay and we want to take him out for dinner on Thursday night. He's gluten intolerant and we always have trouble finding good places to eat.

I'm looking for somewhere that won't break the bank that offers a good range of options for him. So many places say they can adapt their dishes but this often means maybe only one or two otions on the menu. We went to Hill Street Brasserie before and it was fantastic but they've stopped doing the mid-week 'two courses' offer that they used to do and we can't go out too early so we miss out on all the early-bird offers. He doesn't fancy Indian, loves his meat and isn't too keen on fish but anything else goes, preferably in central, south or east Belfast.

Anyone got any tried and tested suggestions?

Thanks.

  • Hey jenny

I've just come from the Chinese Buffet in Victoria Square. Huge selection of dishes for £11.99 per person - salad bar with king prawns, sushi etc, soups, about 40 main courses and loads of fresh fruit cakes and icecreams for desserts.

    Drink very reasonably priced also.

Two meals, two bears a coke and tea £33!!

Hope this is an option - don't know too much about the gluten aspect!!
  • sorry meant two beers (some meal if you get two bears!!!lol)
  • i know its not fancy but wetherspoons have on their menu if its gluten free or not http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/home/food/gluten-free-menu

The Ramore wine bar in Portrush have a fantastic separate gluten free menu - you just ask for it at the bar. Went out recently with a few girly friends and one is gluten free and she was trying to work out what she could have off the menu - then we checked with waitress and she produced a full menu for her - she was absolutely delighted. They also have specially made desserts especially for gluten frees!!

I know this is maybe too far away for you but if you are in that direction highly recommended!

  • Horatio Todds in Ballyhackamore have several gluten free options. You can check out their menu online. :)
  • thai tanic off the lisburn road will make most of their dishes gluten free if you ask them. i cannot rate them high enough. its small, but the food is well priced and amazing. so much better than a chinese with ten tons of salt in its gloop. everything is freshly made and hot.
  • I was in blue chicago at the dundonald entertainment village place, on my way out noticed they had a gulten free menu and it seemed most dishes were on it from the main menu. it an amercian dinner type place but its really nice, well i think so and their prices are not too bad either. hope you have a nice night where ever you go :):)
  • We decided to go to Nick's Warehouse as I'd read that they were able to offer a good range of gluten free options. All I can say is 'WOW'!

When we arrived we were shown to our table and they had a menu especially for my Dad. The chef had highighted all the things that weren't safe for him on the menu and the waiter informed us that they could adapt most dishes to suit him. When he orded his starter the waiter said "I'll bring you some gluten-free bread too". Nice touch. I tried the bread (which looked like little granary herb rolls) and it tasted fantastic. Dad joked with the waiter about asking for the recipe! He was torn between main courses - which doesn't happen very often as the choice is normally so limited. Desserts are always a little more tricky but there were at least 2 or 3 he could go for. In the end he was so full he opted for the ice cream (which I couldn't resist trying too!). It's the first time I've had bramley apple or white chocolate and blackberry ice cream. Yum!

All I can say is a big thank you to Nick's (and to everyone who suggested restaurants) for making taking my dad out for dinner such a enjoyable experience. I'll definately be back to Nick's ... and I think my Dad hopes to the next time he's staying with us!!
