Amazon sell groceries

Has anyone tried them? I've had a quick browse but I am having problems getting the feel of it.

There was a trial done by this service a few weeks ago in the press and they came out of it laughably bad. Multiple suppliers and delivery companies involved in delivering your shopping means huge delays, spread of (your) time in waiting for them to arrive and monstrously excessive delivery miles and packaging mean they have not really got this service working properly.

This is because the press, and some people, tried to compare it to the likes of Tesco and Asda without understanding it.

They sell groceries, but you aren't expected to do your monthly grocery shopping there. It's more for one off items you can't get locally.

Ebay sellers have been doing the same thing for years and make good money from it.

I am feeling a bit wary about it. On the one hand, the vegetables from Banana King on there compare well in price with my supermarket, but unsure about quality, freshness, delivery etc. On the other hand some of the more exotic stuff looks interesting for an occasional purchase.

As far as I can see none of it is from Amazon, so the good experiences I have had with Amazon don't count.

I may make a few test purchases (over time as budget allows) and see how it goes.

Mind you, some of it qualifies for supersaver discount, which has to help.

Edited to add - There are also some of the online butchers that are mentioned in other thread about online butchers, so I suppose if you can use any spare Amazon vouchers eg from ipoints then you could use them to stock up on meat. I haven't compared prices.

I ordered some fabric conditioner last week - no problem. Also ordered masses of dog biscuits for some housebound people, they are coming in seperate packages but were the same price as T esco and no delivery charge.
  • For me, having so many problems getting to the shops, if it ain't delivered it don't come here. So any alternative sources of groceries are interesting.

I will see what happens when I do some test purchases.

  • They are good for bulk-buying. I think their big boxes of crisps are good value.
