If you have a George Foreman grill, you can use this. Makes fab toasties

(I make ham, cheese and onion in mine. I put the ham on the bread, then the onion then the cheese. No butter inside or out on ours, pop into the FG grill, when cheese is melted, cut in half. If you put the ham on the top, I find that the cheese melts but the ham is still a little cold (I guess more heat comes from the bottom grill plate), so if it's on the bottom, it warms through nicely.)Love MSE, Las Vegas and chocolate!0 -
I make toasties under the grill all the time & they turn out fab. Here's how.
1) put 2 slices of bread of the grill pan. Add a slice of ham, or even better chop your ham up into pieces. Top with grated cheese of your choice.
2) Pop under the grill (assuming you turned it on of course) & allow the cheese to melt. Don't let it go to the bubbling ferociously & turning brown stage.
3) Essentially you now have 2 pieces of cheese/ham on toast. Stick them together to form a sandwich. Butter the top of the sandwich (yes, the outside) & stick it back under the grill until golden brown & crispy.
4) Turn it over, butter the other side & do the same again.
5) Eat, decide it was yummy & wonder why you didn't make 2 in the first place?0 -

I butter the outside because that's what I used to do with my old sandwich toaster, so I guess I just did the same when making them under the grill. You could experiment & try without.
You could put ham one side & cheese the other, but I wouldn't bother toasting the ham. I only do it that way to get the cheese started off melting. The first couple of times I did it, I just made the whole sandwich & put it under the grill in one piece, but the cheese in the very middle hadn't melted properly berfore the outside started turning black.
You can also do it in a frying pan - make the sandwich, butter the outside & fry on a low heat til the inside is melted & the outside is golden. In a non stick pan you shouldn't need any oil or anything.0 -
I discovered toastabags about 3 years ago and have never looked back,
Make the cheese and ham ( or whatever) sarnie as normal, place in toastabag and toast in your toaster.
no mess, no fuss, and fab
ebay sellers have these usually for about £4 for two, and they last for aaaaages!:T

Do you have a microwave? USe that too.
I find that just using the grill doesn't melt the cheese enough for me, so I toast the bread (usually but have been known not to) then make up the sarnie (cheese between 2 layers of ham). Put it in the microwave for 30 - 60 seconds - keep an eye on it. When the cheese is melted to your liking, but not yet running out, put it under the pre-heated grill to crisp up the bread. Turn, do the other side and voila.
Ooooh, I'm hungry now
actually - just been thinking about this. I don't toast the bread first at all anymore - I find that the microwave makes it soft anyway so just toast the outside under the grill0 -
Do them in a frying pan.
The classic French toasted cheese and ham Croque monsieur is made this way. If you use a good non-stick pan you won't need too much butter.0
