  • You can give any reference you like, as long as it is factually correct. There is no such thing as a law against being able to give negative references. Most companies will just confirm bare minimum of dates of employment, job title and reason for leaving.

    Thank you for all you're replies. I have a lot to think about!! The lady I'm covering maternity leave for has said that she won't be back until next July so I know I have a while to go.

    There a lots of things i hate about the job but the main on is that the workload I'm expect to cover is enough for two full time people. I have told this to my manager who says he can't do anything about it until the next budget review (next April).

    Its good to know that they cant give me a bad reference if I leave now!

    If the workload is too much then you have to be given priorities. Anything else will just have to be dropped. But if the golden girl you were replacing did it all you're on a bit of a sticky wicket.

  • Is sticking out to July not a possibility? After all it then would look better on your CV given that you were only taken on to cover for maternity leave.

    An employer can give any kind of reference they like - good or bad. As long as they can back up what they say with evidence and it remains factual.

    Actually, they can outright lie and provide no facts, just opinion - as long as they understand that the ex-employee may make a FOI request to see any reference given to their new employer and may sue.

    Im sure the new employer wont be expecting you to be as good as the 1 you are replacing from the word go as it will take time to get into the job, id give it more time but also look for another job, look in the paper, jobsite and other websites
