Is it safe to try and open a normal account?

Hi,

I opened up a basic account with Santander and Natwest about 3 months ago and have since found it a bit of a hassle with no cheque book. Paying for kids school trips and bits of kit for odd amounts is tricky.
I have yet to start a DMP so I've probably got several late payment markers but no defaults yet on my credit file.

I would like to try and open an account that comes with a cheque book but am nervous if my new bank see's my worsening credit file.

Would they close my Basic account if my credit file was very bad?

Thx

    Hi

No they should not close your account even if they turned down your application for a full account.

  • I have justed opened an account with Natwest with a cheque book but no cheque guarantee card.

I have been on a DMP for the past 12 months - I had opened a STEP account with the Natwest when I first went onto my DMP (I didn't have any previous relationship with them), I only just applied online as like you it can get a bit awkward when the school want you to pay for things by cheque.

Wonder how the schools will cope when cheques start to get phased out next year?
