Defaults & Searches - why recorded twice?

Hi guys,
Not sure if this is in the right place or not, but I have recently got a copy of my Experian credit file to see what was on there.
To my horror, it seems that 5 companies have registered the same default against me twice (the entry numbers for each are different)....4 years ago I got into trouble as I had a bad car accident and was unable to work (didn't get company sick pay) for several months hence the defaults (file has lots of lovely green 0's since
).
But are they allowed to register exactly the same defaults twice on your file? And if so, why would they and is there anything I can do about it?
All the details are exactly the same on each of the repeated entries apart from the Experian entry numbers.
It also appears that from the few searches I have had on my file, 3 of the companies have recorded the same searches twice. Same questions apply to this.
Be very grateful for any advice.

No they are not allowed to register the same default more than once.
One debt should only ever be one default by one company. If a debt is sold then sometimes the new co will register the same default and the previous company should remove theirs but the default date must remain the same.
In the first instance I would probably contact Experian to dispute the duplicate defaults. They will probably give you advice on what to do next. You could also get a copy of your file from Equifax. If they also show the duplicates the issue is with the creditors, if they don't then the issue is with Experian.
Also with the searches - no they should only be on once, although this can be harder to prove as sometimes if you chance an application slightly this triggers a new search.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
