Luton Airport

Options
Luton airport has a £1 drop off charge. They have also introduced a £80 fine if you jump out of the car as you pass by the terminal in a traffic queue. The signs say " no stopping" but also that the roads are "private" .

1)Is this legal?
2) If you jump out - when the traffic is stopped - ie you have to stop decause of the queue - how can this be an offense?

Any comment or advice?

I suspect that on private land, they can introduce whatever regulations they like.

And their argument about jumping out when the traffic is at a standstill is that if they allow it, there may sometimes be more delay caused while granny gets suitcase from boot, says a fond farewell to toy boy / grandchild / long lost penfriend or whoever drove them to the airport, and can't actually complete the manoeuvre before the traffic is moving again.

Bristol is free for the first 15 minutes, but you have to go into the short stay car park before you can stop / drop off.

Actually I've just looked at the Luton website. Looks like you can park FREE for an hour, if you use the mid-term car park and take the bus to the terminal. Seems fair enough to me: if I'm picking up from Bristol I will stop at the pub down the road and buy a coffee while I wait for my passenger to clear customs and immigration, cheaper than paying for parking if I can't get in and out in 15 minutes!

If you're running late, you go straight to the pickup point and pay £1. If plenty of time, go to mid-term and use the bus.

It's private land, they can make up whatever rules they want and issue invoices to whoever parks there. Fact is they can't enforce the tickets so by dropping off there you can save yourself £1.

There's lots more about private parking tickets in the Motoring section.
