ideas to use sausage and bacon please

After visiting the meat market yesterday and resocking the freezer we have 10 packs of bacon and 8 packs of sausage along with our joints, steak, gammon steaks and pork chops. Can anyone suggest what to do with the saugage and bacon, other than bangers and mash, toad in the hole, quiche and using the bacon to wrap arond turkey and chicken breasts. We only like "basic" food recipes as we do not like spicey or hot food dishes, and we dont use ready mix sauces in jars or packets. Any ideas are really appreciated. I do have a slow cooker.

Thank you

There is only one thing to do with sausage and bacon.

Add : eggs, beans, fried bread, mushrooms and if in scotland a little haggis.... and some ketchup.:drool:

  • Use the bacon (with tomatoes, garlic, veg) in your bolognese sauce and the meat out of the sausages to make meatballs (fried then ad to the sauce). Add spaghetti and you've got a simple homemade meal.

i did this last night and it went down well.

I often use sausages to make a sort of risotto - fry onions, mushrooms, etc, add sausages (cut smaller if you like), tin tomatoes, seasoning, add whatever spices/herbs you like (I've used paprika, thyme, rosemary or oregano at different times), cook for about 30/45 minutes, cook rice & serve sauce on top of rice, like chilli or curry. It's also nice with jacket or roast potatoes!

    Make a meatloaf or haslet.

Empty out a pound of sausages to make sausagemeat, add a packet of dried stuffing mix (or equivalent in crushed and smashed cream crackers and some mixed herbs). Bind with 1 egg - add pepper and mustard powder , garlic (or whatever you fancy) to taste.

Place in a loaf tin and bake in a medium over for about 1 hour.

Turn out - and eat thickly sliced hot with potatoes veg gravy etc. Cold in sandwiches as it slices thinner - and as for lunchbox snacks.

Lasts a few days (if it hasnt all been eaten that is).
  • Pasta with a dollop of cream cheese stirred in, add cooked bacon pieces. (plus a few herbs if you have some)

Cooked sausages with baked beans under a mashed potato top, browned in oven as an alternative cottage pie.

    BLT sandwiches

    Hot bacon topped salad

Cooked bacon and cheese used to stuff jacket potatoes

Use the sausage meat in stuffing when doing a roast chicken (this cooked sausage meat would make a good sandwich filler too, or for stuffing tomatoes, marrows, peppers etc)

Bacon - with some liver and onions.

Sausage - 'one dish' sausage casserole with onions, mushrooms, peppers, baked beans (and other pulses if you like them) and potatoes.
  • I would make a large batch of sausage casserole - i.e., a tomato sauce base with a few herbs and some garlic, and use different flavourings to turn it into different meals when you're ready to eat it. You could have it:

Just as a sausage casserole - good with mash, jacket potatoes etc
Cut the sausages into chunks and add some tomato puree to make a sausage bolognese sauce to have with pasta
Add a bit of smoked paprika and some beans - to have the mildest chilli to serve with rice or sauteed potatoes
Add bacon (especially if it is smoky bacon) - serve with pasta or mash
Add some veggies and a bit of fajita seasoning and have Mexican sausage wraps
Thin it down with some water and stock, add some tiny pasta shapes and have a meat-feast minestrone soup - good for taking to work

That's one way - the other is to glaze sausages to jazz them up a bit. Bacon is always good in sandwiches or things like carbonara.

Some lovely ideas, which I will be jotting down!

Why, though, OP, did you buy it if you didn't know what you'd be doing with it?! Just interested.

    Hi caris,

If you only bought it yesterday both the bacon and sausages will keep well in the freezer for up to three months. Sausages wrapped in bacon and cooked in the oven are lovely. Make an onion gravy and serve with mashed potatoes. mmmmmm

These earlier threads may give you some inspiration:

    Sausages recipes please!

    What to do with bacon
