Very Confused

Hi all,
I posted on Monday as i had received a letter from a company called Harlands on behalf of Lifestyle FitnessGym. I cancelled my membership over the phone with lifestyle fitness who advised me this would be fine and to cancel my DD.
The letter i received on Monday stated i had ignored a previous letter they had sent me ( I hadn't received any letter) and that if i don't contact them by 24/09/10 then i will owe a total of £211.00 and the cost would be passed over to a debt recovery agency so the cost would increase.
From advise i got off here i set them a letter to say i had cancelled my membership with Lifestyle Fitness themselves and that i was advised to cancel my DD and no further monies were outstanding.
Today i have received a reply from Harlands stating i joined the gym online - i did not i went into the gym itself and joined up then. I was not informed that it was a 12 month contract and i am sure i did not sign any T&C, I just gave my general info (name, address) when she asked for my bank details to set up the DD couldn't as my bank card doesn't have my account number on so i had to ring them up and pass this over the phone. Now i am wondering if the gym themselves accepted the T&C on my behalf.
Now i am just a little confused as to what to do about this as i really don't feel i should pay this amount - any advise on how to reply to the letter i received?
Thanks

No expert advice, but personally I would ask to see a copy of the agreement down at the gym if you went there in person? If they have one, then that's proof you didn't do it online and it should state the terms ? They may remember you or you them, which could be helpful, and most companies dislike customers turning up making any fuss over this kind of thing.
More experienced and helpful folk will probably be along, but I'd resent paying this myself as it seems to be their incompetence at fault basically. Hope you get a positive outcome

There are posts on CAG about Harlands who seem to be a company that administer payments for gym membership.

If Lifestyle Fitness were happy that you cancelled, can you go back to them and ask them to contact Harlands for you to sort this problem out?0
