Hi all,
Hope you can help. I got my hair dyed in a salon as a hair model as the grey was becoming unbearable!!
Its been a few weeks and my roots are starting to come through. I can't afford to go to a salon so was wondering whether anyone could give me any pointers on doing it myself at home?
I had really dark brown hair and the salon dyed it black so the greys are really noticeable.
TIA

Hi Always_Alone,
I use L'Oreal Nice n' Easy especially when I shop around as you can usually find one's with money off or 2 for 1 offers. Please don't be nervous, I'm blonde and the first time I used it I didn't mix the 2 bottles together so I just put pure peroxide on my hair, you can imagine the screams that came from me when my scalp was on fire. My name really says it all about me lol!!
Nice n' Easy has suited me well so I havn't been brave enough to try any others. If your really nervous go for one of the non permanent ones, then it will wash out easier. Don't be scared, you go girl!!:A0 -
Don't be nervous Always_Alone, as with any hair dye that will touch your scalp, remember to do a patch test first.0

Don't worry , with dark hair it's hard to go wrong!
Did the hairdresser use a permanent black or a semi-permanent which will wash out eventually. Also, do you like the black colour or prefer your dark brown? Just something to consider before you decide which shade to buy as the Nice and Easy root-touch-up kit is permanent colour.
Also if is there someone who could help you do the back, it makes things easier.0 -
As a dark haired lady with grey roots ide advise you to go lighter.Get boots colour b4 ( 3 boxes) use one once a week and remove dark colour. When you have done this put on a light brown semi ( loreal castings is great) takes time to go lighter but persevere.0

Thanks all for taking the time to reply.
The hairdresser did a permanent colour and ideally, i'd like to go back to a very dark brown colour (as near to natural as possibel, without the grey though!!) so i'll give your suggestions a go.
Hopefully, i don't !!!! it up and end up with bright orange!

Try to find a good match for your hair by using the colour guide usually on top of the
hair dye boxes.
It is always easier if you could get help, especially to do it this way.
All of the hairdyes will have instructions in them but if not:
1) Do a patch test and leave for 24hours. If it irritates you rinse it off and do not use/
2) Part your hair down the centre, then from ear to ear and clip each section. The top
of your head should resemble a hot cross bun parting.
3) Take your first quadrant and take thinly spaced sections of hair each time applying
the colour (Usually best done with a tail comb). Clip that section back up and repeat for the
other 3.
4) Apply all the remaining hair dye to your hair and make sure you have covered
your hairline and behind your ears etc
5) Leave the colour for as long as it says in the instructions
6) Rinse according to manufacturers instructions.
Also wear an old tshirt, I've made the mistake of wearing my favourite top before lol
Hope that helps a little bit0 -
I would also suggest going a slightly lighter shade than the black. Even a dark brown can look black, so you probably want a medium brown, at a guess. Start with a cheapy semi-permanent dark brown, and just put it over the whole head, concentrating on the roots, then before that washes out either use another semi permanent dark brown or go to medium brown permanent, again you can safely put it on the whole head, but just concentrate on the roots. As your hair grows out, you can get used to just doing the roots.
A good tip is to put a bit of vaseline around your hairline on your forehad and ears, it stops the permanent colour from dyeing your skin!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0
