HELP - 23 year old debt caught up with me!

please help anyone with advice. I have just had a letter from a debt collection agency for £71K for a repossession mortgage from 23 years ago. To cut a long story short I also have a letter from this from another company saying they are willing to settle this account for 1500. This was prior to receiving this latest one. Do I have too pay this 71k after all these years, should I go to caught as the Halifax are obviously willing to accept the 1500.
