Amazing Freebie Haircut

I'm new to this forum so hi!
Just wanted to share with you the best freebie I've ever had. Found myself jobless and bankrupt and have to look at money a whole new way now - and I'm getting quite addicted to finding out what's free out there...
I got highlights done at a really great salon in Regent's Street worth £120... for nothing!!! Obviously this was done by a student, but a very good one! She told me there was a charge of £15 for the foils but when I said I didn't have it, she just said she'd do it for free! I walked out having spent no money with great looking highlights done in a salon celebs have been known to go to!!! :T
Found it via Gumtree under 'freebies'. It's well worth checking there for that sort of thing if you're skint!

Although I think your freebie is absolutely brilliant, I think its unfair for people to go looking for free haircuts. Students need a lot of practice and i think it is great you let them practice but they are also really broke and needing to start out so money would be really appreciated. I'm only saying this because I trained as a hairdresser
. I recommend people should visit their salons and get their hair done by trainees though because its a lot cheaper

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. in a major salon like this one shounds like it is, the hairdresser or junior wouldnt get the money for hair cut /colour done anyway it goes so salon so nothing wrong with getting a frebbie!!!0 -
But as far as paying for things like foils go, its not so good to not pay anything- I am sure they can let the odd person off if they feel its a genuine 'no money' issue but there may be salons where the fee comes out of the students pay or the salon in the end has to impose a fee for all cuts and colours which is higher then otherwise which isn't fair in the long run.
I'd also advise going along and giving a healthy tip if your v.pleased with the cut- not only as its a nice thing to do but it can give the student heaps of confidence.0 -
Wow, way to rain on Alocin's parade! If this was advertised as 'free' then there should be ZERO charge once you are there! I have seen plenty of ads in salon windows for hair models, where they let loose a trainee on your hair, and you pay nothing as it gives them real world practice. This would be the same with any profession, students/trainees are always in need of money, but practice makes perfect. Plus they would only need to do a few of these before they are let loose as paying clients.
This all reminds me, I need a haircut......0 -
I agree that people should expect to pay for the materials used on their hair even if the actual hairdressing service is free. Our local college offers "free" haridressing but you have to pay a nominal charge so that scissors etc can be replaced and also for any dyes, foils etc that are used.
My Mam always turns up there without any money and they still do her hair but I always feel quite guilty about it as the students have to pay for their own equipment.0 -
Good for you OP!
I think its scandalous the amount some hairdressers charge anyway so well done you

I'm always tempted, but too shy to call in at a salon to enquiry about the 'models required'. How do you go about it?
Also, I'm a bit wary of what kind of haircut you can expect? I mean, after all it is a student practicing, can you tell them what you want? Plus, they could give you an awful haircut (I've had plenty of those whilst paying!). What are your views about it? Cheers!0 -

You just go in/call up the salon (going in is better as they can see your hair and make quick decisions that way) and say "I just saw your sign in the window, are you still looking for hair models?" to which they can then give you more info. Normally they will say something along the lines of "its by student but they have x years of experience and a tutor will be supervising throughout".
They may also say if they are only doing certain styles (eg graduated bob seems to be a big favorite) and you can say if this is suitable but normally they will ask first "what are you looking for" to see if the student is looking for that in their portfolio. If your just desperate for anything and just want a cut you could say "I am open to anything/change" and this gives them free reigns. I used to say this when I was a model for Vidal Sassoon and they loved me! Put me in the front window, used me for Japanese students (OMG do they like their cameras!) was a laugh but had I not been an art student with bags of confidence I'd have not pulled it off as well so saying your open to anything comes with some clout!
They are not all free (cuts I mean) many salons need a fee for products used or even tutor time and fees vary so make sure you do get this straight beforehand as often the student will have to foot the bill if the fee is not covered and just like most other students, they too are often broke due to not having paid work or student loan/personal loan not stretching far enough. Some will be free though but IME it is rare.0 -
It depends on how they have been training and their abilities whether you can ask for specific styles.
When I trained at college we did really basic hair cuts, blow-drys, colours etc and in the second year we had training to advance our skills.
No hairdresser will let a trainee on your hair without thinking that they are capable and usually a tutor/ hairdresser will book the slot free to offer guidance. They usually check through it at the end if it is an assessment to double check for any mistakes.
It's always great to leave a tip to a student or offer to pay a small amount towards the service because equipment prices are quite high and the amount of hair clips you go through each month is crazy.
I'm really glad this discussion has been brought up because so many students need models. I did hairdressing two years ago and my sessions sometimes were pretty much empty due to people being concerned about us being students but all the greatest hairdressers had to learn somewhere
