We're looking for a decent washing machine/dishwasher & a fridge freezer.

For family use Washing Machines, pretty much anything below £500 will have been built for that price. You may get lucky and it lasts 5+ years, but many will develop a fault before this. Although breakdowns in the first couple of years may be backed up by a warranty, it doesn't always cover labour. Plus waiting for parts and the inconvenience of being without your machine really makes buying another 'cheap' machine an attractive option. This is exactly what most stores and manufacturers want, to sell you a new machine every few years.
Most of the traditionally reliable brand names have now been bought out and a machine bought now from the same manufacturer compared to the 80's/90's is unlikely to bear any resemblance in quality.
Unfortunately, for long lasting quality machines (like you used to get 15+ years ago), you're looking at a large initial outlay. Only two manufacturers build their machines to last. Miele and ISE. IMO, probably the best compromise between quality and price would be the ISE AW23.
See the UK White Goods site for alot of interesting information on brands and quality discussion:

It would be helpful if we had some price range indications for each item: washing machine, dishwasher, fridge freezer. Are there any space constraints for the refrigerator? (we can look at American fridge freezer models if you have the space, but they are wider than the traditional fridge).Shin: a device for finding furniture in the dark.
