I really need a winter coat!!

hello,

I really need to buy a winter coat but am finding it really hard price and style wise.

I am a pear shaped and 5'2 in height.

I was hoping to find something in Debenhams but looking round the website couldn't find anything of a reasonable price that I liked. I liked the Jasper Conrad, oversised parka but at £120 it should be nice too!!

I also liked one that I saw in Next, its like a military inspired jacket with asymetrical buttons down the front. I'm worried its not suitable for my shape.... Im sick of buying things and then realising they are lovely but look awful on me!

Any comments or further suggestions hugely welcomed!

im a 5'3 pear shape and i have just bought this http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33057&storeId=12556&categoryId=226022&parent_category_rn=226021&productId=1939287&langId=-1

I love it more than i love alot of things and i cant wait for it to get cold!!

I always buy my coats with those cap sleeves or whatever theyre called to ballance out my hips and it gives coats a bit more femininity...but it depends what your style is i suppose!
  • You don't say what size you are, but have you looked at Evans? They have some lovely coats and if you are quick you can get about 1/3 off (runs out today though!) as everything is 20% off and there is a code for an extra 20% and free delivery if you spend over £40.

I've ordered a parka but there is a lovely grey duffle coat (looks nicer in real life than in the picture)

BHS have some lovely coats as well, this one is lovely in the khaki

  • I was never one for window shopping, but over the last few years have spent time with a friend who married a millionaire, loves shopping, and wanted me to tag along as translator and company. So without meaning to, I've spent time trying on a more expensive and extensive range of clothes (not buying!), which has given me a better idea of what works and does not work on me.

I would suggest spending a day trying on coats in all kinds of shops, even the expensive ones. The idea is that you then get an idea of what's out there, and how something that works on you looks like "flat" on the hangers. Then you'd be better situated to spot the likely candidates when browsing online not only for this coat, but for future coats too.

I spent a day traipsing through shops to get a pair of knee high boots. Was a bit fed up that it took so long to get were after all just a pair of durned boots that were comfy to walk in(whilst lugging baggage through airports, etc, i.e. heavy walking) and that looked good. Finally found a pair. Two years later, the boots (not me) are still getting compliments. These boots are making a lot of new friends, and I seem to be just the tagger-along. It's akin to being the dogwalker to a cute puppy, and people want to talk to the puppy and talk to you just because you're with the puppy. *rolls eyes*
  • you could try the petite section in next :)
  • hey again,

Thanks for all the replies!! I am a size 12-14 (I verge on a 12 mainly) hence when I have tried Evans stuff it tends to be too big. I had thought of the petite section of Next, does anyone have any comments on the Next coat I have linked? I really like it, but am worried I will make yet another style mistake ;( and this one would be quite a big one since my coat and me is often the 1st thing people see.....

Thanks CattKitt sounds like a plan ....

Thanks all for the links, I love having a look at what other people are buying

  • Hiya,

I've been a customer of Next for quite a few years, though I don't use my account as much nowadays. If you have an accoutn with them you can easily order it from them and try it on in the comfort of your own home and if you don't like it then you can just return it. I did notice a thread on here to say that Next are now charging for returns, but I didn't read it so it might be something to check out, however you can just take it to your nearest store even if you had it delivered initially.
I do agree it's a fab coat and I may have to look at it closer myself lol, but I've had my eye on some of those worker style boots for ages and I'm trying to hold out until they come down in price before i buy them :rotfl:

Re the Next coat you have linked to:
It looks lovely, something I would try on. The key seems to be to know the brand, and have an idea of the quality of cut and fabric they're currently offering.

For instance, at the extreme end of the scale, Atmosphere stuff is deadly cheap and photographs well, but a lot of their stuff in real life is just that bit "off", thus not offering the wearer that touch of elegance and completeness to the eye. However, I wouldn't dismiss Atmosphere completely, especially with their non-tailored items, as depending on the jackpot combination of item(and they do a LOT of different items) and your body shape, it can just hit that sweet spot.

It's also about knowing the brand, which is different from brand snobbishness . For example, I like some Jaeger items, but they obviously seem to aim their items for a much taller customer. Dismissing a designer just on the basis of one lot of clothes can give you a distorted picture; tracking them for a few seasons' collections will give you a truer idea.
  • One place I seem to do well with on trend coats is H and M,I never spend more than 30 pounds and they usually last me between 3 and 5 years.I am a huge fan of Next and love the coat you linked, very smart and I think it would be very flattering.
Live each day as if it was you're last

I'm a 12-14, 5'2 and pear shaped! I've just bought this fab coat - quite impractical, being velvet, but just gorgeous in real life - and a lovely navy peacoat from Sainsbury's. I'd second the advice to just go and try lots of styles on. The Next one looks lovely though and the slim fit waist should really give you a great shape.
