AVG won't stop running scans

OH has a Dell laptop running XP and AVG free edition. The laptop has slowed to a crawl as AVG runs constant scans (not just the scheduled daily one). Each time you have to manually stop it and even then it often doesn't stop. I have been into AVG settings and it just overrides them.
Should he remove AVG and reinstall it or is there a better free anti virus/malware that is easy to use and will run on a scheduled scan basis without slowing down the machine? Do I just do 'add and remove programs' to get rid of AVG?
thanks

I would unistall it. AVG has become very resource hungry. I'm with Avast (www.avast.com) and not had a problem in years.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0

Yes, and then run the AVG Remover
Before you remove it, download, but don't install Avast 5 to your Desktop.
Then remove AVG, reboot and then install AVAST 5. Register here0 -
In my opinion remove AVG as it's currently not the most effective FREE anti-virus program available. Use the AVG Removal Tool available here, the 32bit version.
Instead download and install either Avast 5 or Microsoft Security Essentials.0 -
I use Microsoft security essentials on my netbook which isn't used much. Is it as effective as Avast? I find it easy to use as I am no techie0
