Query re overpaid tax - how long to hit bank account?

My OH is due a tax repayment :j
He got notification in yesterday of the sums overpaid for the past four years and when we checked on line it is telling us a bank repayment was made and the date is 8 September. Nothing is in the bank yet and I'm getting worried it went to the wrong account. I can't see anywhere online where we can check exactly which account it was sent to. Does anyone know how long it might take?

HMRC won't know your bank details unless you've told them as part of your claim for a tax refund. Employers don't give HMRC details of the bank account your wages are paid into you. Normally, an employee tax refund would be paid by cheque direct to you. If you have, in fact, made a claim on a tax return and entered your bank details on the tax return, then HMRC will have used the details you told them.

Yeah, we had to fill in tax returns for the past 4 years, it was re mileage allowance - paid at 12p per mile, so we are claiming back the tax now on the difference between the 12p and the recommended 40p. We did put the bank details on the tax returns, it just seems strange it's saying on HM Revenue website that repayment was sent to our bank account on 8th September and nothing is in yet, I would have though it should have been in by now.
I'll need to get OH to try to phone and speak to someone I think.

Quick update - still showing on HM Revenue website as being paid out to bank account on 8 September. OH phoned though and it is presently going through security checks so will take another couple of weeks now.
