    hi craftycrofty
The eggshell I used is waterbased and so painting it onto an oil based primer caused the paint to sort of shrink back - as oil and water dont mix. I hadnt thought of this, so I just had to paint it with loads of coats of F&B - it turned out ok, but prob cost me more money. So i suppose it depends on what type of paint you use - i beleive that all F&B eggshell is now waterbased but used to be oil based - I think thats right - I'm sure the more experienced people on here can clarify this x

    Sorry Debbsi, cross posted! :)

    Crafty Crofty

Could any one advise me before I start.

    1. Should I fill the small holes on the top or leave them in for distressing purposes?!! If filled should I use wood filler? If you plan to paint it then a wood filler will give a more even surface. If you plan to have it natural then the wood filler may be visible and spoil the look.
    2. Would you say 1 or 2 coats of prima/undercoat As many as a re necessary for the paint to be fully opaque. Otherwise you will be wasting topcoat by having to do extra coats
    3. Would you advise to paint the whole thing white or just the legs? Personal taste. For me it would depend on the quality/colour of the top. When I leave wood bare I prefer to oil rather than varnish it, for a more natural look. Rustins Danish Oil £3ish is my favourite.
    4. How many coats of F & B? I usually do two thin coats.
    5. What do you use to finish off - varnish or glaze or something else? Eggshell/satinwood and gloss need no 'finishing'. If you are using emulsion then a waterbased varnish, or alternatively a wax.

whenever ive done any painting ive done several coats of undercoat i like all traces of what was there originally gone before i apply my F&B on a couple of projects recently i used about 6 coats of undercoat, i think it also depends on how dark the wood is to start with that you are going over

this table and chairs had loads of undercoates
    whitetable.jpg

    so did this

    After with new oak top

Just a quick query; is it worth getting a glue gun and are they easy to use? :)

    Love your make-overs hmo :D

tara :D I have just brought a hot glue gun (1st time I have used one :o) It was so easy to use, I just pushed the glue stick in the back and waited for it to heat up and used it on my DGD's peg rack I made for them (must go take a pic :D)

Now, fingers crossed the weather is getting better I can finish my pine corner shelf unit and finish my kitchen I started last year :rotfl:

Nice and girly for my 2 Princesses :D just have to make some patchwork mini bags to hang on them so they can keep their hairbands and bits in :D
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

I could cry when I think of the lovely sideboard I had to get rid of when I moved in with my OH 6 years ago as we didn't have the room for it then but now I could do with it and it would have painted up a treat :(

I went to my mums in Norfolk for the weekend and she took me to a big CS and I could cry again when I saw a beautiful Art Deco style dressing table with mirror for £14.95 :o If I could have got it in my little Polo and get it back to Derbyshire I would have done as they sell for £150 in the CS's here :(
