Curtains in the kitchen?

I posted this earlier, but it seems to have disappeared into the abyss  In my kitchen we have a upvc double glazed window and a aluminium double glazed door, and a tiled floor, this morning it was freezing with just a little economy 7 storage heater (we don't have gas in our village). And I was wondering about whether it was a) extremely distasteful or b) actually quite unhygienic to have curtains in the kitchen to try and keep the draught out from the windows - does anyone have curtains in their kitchen? Do they get dirty - I don't live in a greasy cafe or anything but still wondered about keeping them clean :p

I'd definitely hang one above the door. You can always sling it in the wash if it gets minging. I'd be wary about putting curtains anywhere near a cooker for both fire safety and it getting splashed by food but if you have e.g. a window above a sink I'd put one over that window, no problems.

Have you thought about a blind? we have vertical blinds in our kitchen and they do seem to do the same job as curtains which is to provide a barrier between the room and the glass.. they are easily cleaned and are not a fire hazard .. they do get grubby but I take them down and wash every so often..

Blinds are a good idea, and give a more up to date look. They are easy to fix - if you can put up a curtain rail, you can put up a blind.

Argos do thermal roller blinds that really keep out the cold and keep in the heat in winter. I put some up in my north-facing unheated bedrooms last winter, and it made a big difference to the warmth of the rooms.

  • My kitchen doesn't have a heater... I have 12 year old lovely lined curtains my mum made for a house when I was younger...!

Anyway we've had them up 2 and a half years... and they are lovely... makes the room warm and cozy! Very rarely have to wash them... don;t have issues with grease either!

However, blinds are horrible... I had some and unless you have time to clean them all the time the grease builds up and make you feel sick cleaning them....!

Curtains come off easily, wash and hang back wet! Done!

I don't understand how your blinds can be caked in grease build up when curtains in the same room don't ? I have to take my blinds down maybe every 6mths not because they are greasy but just to wash off the dirt and dust that gathers where the windows have been open..

That's fair enough, good point... Thinking about it I haven't had blinds in this house... so I suppose it's a bit biased as I don;t have a controlled environment when testing!!

But if I had grease problems... since I hate the smell... curtains are the way to go!

If you are worried about hygiene in relation to soft furnishings then I would say that generally curtains are easier to wash at home than blinds are.
My windows are an od size so I haven't sorted anything out at the moment, but I have never found curtains to be a problem in the kitchen in the past, and my Nan certainly had them in hers (as we are talking OS!

I favour curtains in our kitchen even though we had double glazed window in last year and it made a difference. I just think curtains make it look 'cosier' somehow -maybe mind over matter ? Always have a heavy curtain at the door as the cats are in and out the cat flap.
I do keep a spare pair of curtains (both were cheap from charity shop) so when one lot are a bit manky they get washed and the others go up.
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

  • We had curtains in our kitchen until we had double glazing put in a couple of weeks ago. We used to have three curtains (bit window) but had decided that we'd just put two back up as decoration but in reality we prefer the look without now the window frames are nicer than they used to be. We didn't have any problems with them previously though, we just took them down now and again and lobbed the curtains in the machine. I'm of a similar view to some other posters, I'd rather than curtains that I can just put in the machine rather than a blind (although we have blinds in the bathrooms).

I used to have curtains in the kitchen, then changed to venetian blinds but I think I'm going to go back to curtains because the kitchen seemed much colder last winter with the blinds.

Problem is OH prefers the blinds so I think I "might" compromise, take the blinds down for the winter but leave the fittings up so I can put the blinds back in the spring.

Plus I hate cleaning the blinds, curtains are sooo much easier, just chuck them in the washer.
