Stuck for idea for birthday for new man friend of 51 years of age. Only known him for 6 weeks and just come across this from gift ideas on the net. I know he likes gardening and roses in particular but cna't get my head around how this gift works. Has anyone had experience of this gift or any other ideas.

I think naming a rose for someone you've only recently met might be slightly presumptuous - or does he get to choose the name?
Anyway, there are several websites that allow you to "register" some rose seeds, one of them is called "Amore Rose Registry" which website is operated by a gift company which also offers a belly button brush. Enough said
To be a formal name of a cultivar (variety) the name must be registered by The International Cultivar Registration Authority - Roses, which is operated by the American Rose Society. Each hybridizer ('breeder') sets their own fees, but this can be in the thousands or tens of thousands. See this answer on the RHS site.
If he's a knowledgable gardener he might be insulted in a fake certificate from the sort of outfit that also lets you adopt a fossil.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
I was going to let him chose the name, like you say I don't want him to name it after me! Certainly don't want to spend thousands of pounds!0

If he is a keen gardener are there no roses named after him already? I bought a rose years ago that was named after my daughter and didn't cost the earth.:jmember of the thrifty gifty 2011 :j0
