We have recently had several phone calls from Debtline professing to be able to help us with our debts.
We told them basically to take a hike and not to call us as they had obtained our telephone number by dubious methods and we didn't need their help as we have our own free DMP in progress.
On checking OH's Credit Expert account the cheeky what-nots have have done a search which flagged up an alert!! without first checking that it was ok with us -as it was done back in August under the name of Lowell Financial Ltd.
Credit Expert said this is unlawful but unfortunately becoming more common. Because not only are they debt collecting they are touting for business!! (Incidentally none of our debts are being collected by this company.)
Needless to say Credit Expert have removed the entry and Debtline had an extremely stroppy phone call from OH today telling them we are lodging a complaint with the FSA because this is an unlawful practice. Has anyone else had this problem?

This fits in with the general theme of stories we hear about Debtline.

They are linked to FLM guarantor loans and their 'help' is often (surprise!) a FLM loan. They should not be touched with a bargepole.

They are nothing to do with National Debtline, who are brilliant and fee-free. So if you ever want to recommend National Debtline, remember to emphasise the National bit!

They really shouldn't be allowed to trade under such a misleading name.
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

  • Ok this is slightly worrying as I think Debtline is who we have our DMP setup with, if this is the case what should I do ?

    Hi Wiggy

If you're with a fee-charging debt manager (regardless of who it is) we recommend that you move your dmp to a fee-free manager, or do-it-yourself. You should also get a 'second opinion', maybe from National Debtline about whether a dmp is the right option for you.
