Overpaid tax - still waiting help

Hi,
This is regards a friend
Since march they have been waiting for a tax rebate .The forms have been filled un but lost numerous times .They had an appointment with a manager due to all this and were told it would be resolved .Their wages have gone up however they are still on wrong tax code and currently paying tax for a company car & van when they have neither .
Who or what department should they take thier complaint to as we are talking a lot of money in overpaid tax.

They should demand a Unique taxpayer's Reference which is their legal right. They should complete it, or pay an accountant to do so for £80 to £100 plus VAT. Whoever does the return should file it online. From that moment, it will only be 3 weeks until the cash hits their bank account.

There are hundreds of thousands of people like your friends. They should act quickly. By Christmas potentially millions more will be in their situation, as the latest batch of errors hits the street.

It's curious how often HMRC "lose" letters saying that someone has a tax repayment due. It happens much less often when you write telling them someone has tax to declare!

What self-assessment criteria do you think the friend fulfills that you would suggest asking for a UTR number and thus complete tax returns? This is the second person today that I've noticed you advising someone to demand a UTR.

It would take about 6 weeks for a UTR to be issued anyway and then a further couple of weeks waiting for the online activation PIN to be sent out to enable them to file online. Then you are saying once it is filed it would be another 3 weeks for the refund to be issued. Thats 11 weeks in total.

The op's friend can find information about making a formal complaint here - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/complaints-appeals/how-to-complain.htm

Regarding their current 10/11 tax code they should be able to get that sorted over the phone by calling the taxes helpline 0845 300 0627 (sorry don't know any other number). The failure to process the refund for earlier years can be the subject of the formal complaint.

Call 08453000627 (This is now the only number for PAYE enquiries) as Pam said. First of all go through the tax code situation with the advisor, get the company car/van removed from the code, simple. With regards to the previous years repayment this can be done over the phone assuming your friend has all the details with him when he calls,i.e. P11d, details of his employers for the year(s) in question, details of any other income received. The advisor, assuming all the information is correct and held on the file will be able to do the assessment over the phone, not a problem, then simply ask to speak to a manager if you still want to start the formal complaints process. This involves speaking to a manager in the first instance, this will be passed to a complaints manager who will call you back, assuming he/she cannot resolve the matter they will refer it to a specific copmplaints team who will investigate and respond by letter within 25 days.

I am only suggesting the UTR route because this had been going on since March, which is 6 months by my reckoning. I'm assuming the "friend" has run up a decent sized phone bill on the 0845 numbers, and has written a good few letters in to the mail queue. These assumptions may be incorrect.

If they are not, I am assuming the "friend" is very wary of HMRC and its processes, hence a more or less cast-iron guarantee of a refund within the next 11 weeks, just in time for Christmas, would be an attractive option. I had a feeling I might end up spelling all of this out.

Why should someone lose £80 to £100 +VAT, when they can do it for free by calling HMRC. Business must be bad if your touting for it on here.

Complete and utter rubbish. I issued 5 repayments today, just by answering the phone, asking a few questions and completing the assessment with the person on the phone.

If you have the information needed and the employer has done their job and sent the P60,then their is no reason the refund cannot be dealt with on the phone.
