Suitable jobs for a 14 yr old girl?

Hi all

DD is turning 14 soon. She asked the other day if she can get a job now.

I'd like her to get something to teach her the value of money. I don't mind helping her but at a loss for ideas.

When I was a kid it was paper rounds but I doubt its safe nowadays plus i dont think many get morning papers anymore?

Anyone any suggestions?

Thanks

  • When I was 14 I took a small job waitressing on a Saturday/Sunday at my local Golf Club. The money/tips were fine.

What about offering weekend Dog Walking services to neighbours/friends/family etc.

Washing up or waitressing in a pub/cafe or restaurant on weekends if she is old enough (not sure of recent age laws!) or babysitting if you think shes responsible enough & she likes children. I did all of these jobs whilst i was at school & always had more money than my friends who just had pocket money from there parents;).
  • Thanks for the ideas....keep them coming. That's similar to what I was thinking.

Might help her make some advertising cards/posters for local shops for dog walking/babysitting. She's very mature for her age and already a couple of close friends will ask her to babysit if they need to.

Why is it not safe to deliver papers? My 13 year old is on the waiting list for our local shop.
Here I go again on my own....
  • When I was 14 I worked in a hairdressers as a saturday girl- just washing hair, answering phones and making coffee. You get tips too!

I also worked as a saturday girl in a local ice cream parlour (oh yummy). But generally waitressing/glass collecting work is good, she can build her customer service/ people skills!

I don't think you can work in 'proper' shops until you turn 16.

I used to raise chickens and sell the eggs around the village when I was young. Learned about lots of things from animal care to undercutting the competition :-)

Not so useful if you're in a town.

My son is 13 and has applied for a paper round (free weekly local paper) and also has his name down for sticking up skittles at the British Legion club. He also does youngpoll.

At 14 I worked at a pet shop cleaning out the animal's cages... said pet shop is thankfully no longer there as it was the dirtiest place on earth! I didn't last long but still feel bad for those poor animals. Think I got about £10 for a mornings work.

When my girls were 14 I took on a local Avon round in my name but they did all the delivery /collection of books, placed and sorted orders, worked out commission and paid Avon. They both did it for a couple of years each (DD2 took over from DD1 when she got a 'proper' Saturday job) and it worked really well
