1st mortgage payment

Hi All
We are due to complete on 30th september, and stated our preferred payment day to be the 1st of each month.
The FA just called me to say that usually with halifax they take the payment 14 days after completion, then I have to call them to confirm the DD date..... is this the case? The problem is the FA has been pretty useless all the way through the process and has only ever given us half a story, so thought I would find out if anyone on here knows how it usually goes or if i should just call halifax?
Or will they write to us before 1st payment is taken anyway?

They have to write to you before the 1st payment under direct debit rules, and before any changes in the monthly direct debit as well.0
