Old debt that shouldnt exist showing up on my credit score

Hi Guys and Girls, my first post so I appreciate any time you spend helping me!
I've recently sold my car and trying to get back to good credit so I can afford to move to a new place.
Short version is this - I've just done my credit score for the first time and I have a default which shouldnt exisist - I've never been chased about it so didn't know.
Its by Link Financial (doing some googling showing not good reviews of them!)
I took a car out in finance, then after 3 years upgraded back in 2007 - I effectivly Sold the orginal car back to Ford and got my new one.
Now for some reason there was a mess up with the paperwork from Ford credit - and they charged me for 1 months payment (only £181 but thats beside the point) for my old car once the finance was settled.
Turns out as this was never chased it got passed to Link Financal and they are aprently own the debt.
Now this is where I'm out my debt - now that I've contacted them they are playing hard ball and now want the payment. Ford agreed this was done in error however Link arn't giving up.
My two questions is
1) How to proceed with regards to getting Link to null and void the debt
2) Can it be arrange that this default doesn't appear on my account - they last updated it 12/09/2010 (two days ago!)
Hope this makes sense
Any feedback would be good.
Ta.

Can you get anything in writing from Ford?0

Hi FatBelly,
Just been trying that, had a little whinge at them today and its been passed onto a senior staff who's opened up a email dialog between Ford and Link so at least I've got them to talk to each other now.
Just say best case I manage for them to agree that the debt is incorrect - How do I go around to get it taken off my credit score?
Thanks!!!0 -
You send your letter from Ford to the data controller at Link - address should be at the end of the Experian report - demand that the entry be removed.
If no joy, you complain to the Information Commissioners Office0
