I have taken control at last

This is a bit of a yarn (yawn) so feel free to move on, but I need to get it all off my chest!

I have 5 credit cards, and owe a total of £41785 on them.

I have been on these boards for about 6 weeks doing a bit of research, and I have learnt so much, and it has taken me this long to get myself going as I felt so ashamed of myself, and this huge debt.

Last week I finally spoke to CCCS and put together a budget. I initially felt I couldn't face ringing my creditors myself so I was going to let CCCS deal with it, but my pack arrived in the post this weekend, and from the £94 I have each month to repay them, I worked out my offer to each company and I have today phoned them all. It was hard, and I am still feeling very emotional about it!

I am pleased to say aside from Barclaycard they have all accepted my offer. Barclaycard want to review it in 30 days. They did try to push the amount up I offered, but said I simply couldn't pay, so they accepted what I proposed for 30 days!

So I know that for the next few months anyway I can get on with sorting other aspects of my life.

I am looking for work with a higher income, as I am over qualified for what I do, and also looking for ways to cut back a bit more. I am also looking to do a bit of extra casual (all above board) work so when my circumstances change I can offer more.

This weekend I'm going to get some stuff on ebay and see what I can sell.

I know its a long haul because of the amount I owe, but at least I feel as though Im in control at the moment. I haven't felt like that for a long time.

I hope this might help other newbies and thank you for listening!

    Hi Jayn,

Well done for posting and good luck. Can you post an SOA that we can have a look at and maybe give you a few ideas.

Also, as the amount is so large, is it worth looking at an IVA? x
  • Hi Jayn,

Just wanted to say Well Done! I owe a similar amount to you and had not missed any payments but it came to a point where I couldn't carry on robbing peter to pay paul and I have been on a DMP for the last few weeks. The relief is tremendous!!

I really do admire you for speaking to your creditors, I haven't been that brave:o
