Braces?

I have a huge gap between my front teeth that I want to close up. The misalingment of the teeth in my jaw has also caused me huge jaw pain problems, though none in recent years - just my jaw cracking and popping everytime I open it.

It should have been fixed as a child, but my dentist kept putting it off and off and off until I have to pay for it myself.

I've checked and won't be able to get any help from the nhs paying for braces to fix it, but can fix it if I pay for it myself. The best price, along with a good survice I've found amounts to just under 4000 pounds (the maximum estimated quote so could be a bit cheaper). I can afford this, though it'll only leave me with a couple of thousand of savings.

I want this fixed while I'm still young so I have more time to enjoy it, so am pretty much set on going through with it. Just thought I'd ask if anyone knows of any ideas I haven't thought of to get some funding or reduce the price, before I set myself to booking it.
Amount left to pay on house = 64,400.

Savings buffer = 1,028.75 of 2415.

Next large expense = 159 of 483.

  • I think you are doing the right thing, I had to wear one years 7 ago and have never looked back. Perhaps you can shop around to see if you can get it for less? I paid £2000 for both upper and lower teeth in London. Can't believe prices have doubled since then.

You're not going to get any help with the cost.

Just go for it, and enjoy a lifetime with a nice smile!

    Good luck.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Prices depend on the complexity of what's being done.

Braces are just a tool, not the treatment. It' a bit like saying every job done with a screwdriver will cost £20!

OP said £4k was a maximum 'worst case scenario' - an it's good that his orthodontist has put it to him/her like this, rather than quoting a cheap price, and then bumping the bill upwards.

Dental treatment is very much about a trusting relationship, and if you trust the person doing it (And they sound very trustworthy if he's given you a 'maximum' quote) then I wouldn't go rocking the boat by seeing other people who may not be so upfront about the cost.

  • Thank you for the replies, just wanted to make sure I've done all I can before booking it and your replies have put me at ease. The braces themselves were nearer 3300 but I have to have an operation before they can put them on which pushes the estimate closer to 4000.

Thank you for the encoragement and I will get things in motion to get braced. :D

Having mine done at the moment with a small brace that just fits over the front teeth, only £1300 and barely visible. Can't remember the name, will post later when it comes back to me
There is no issue so small that it can't be blown out of proportion
  • I'm having a invisalign fitted in the next few weeks at a place in chester its only costing me £1695 for top and bottom including whitening, retainers and check ups for 12 months afterwards :)

If you are anywhere near chester pm me and i'll give you their details :)

There are many different types of braces not all of which are suitable for all problems.

Invisalign, clearstep and similar systems are , in general, not suitable for major tooth movements and derotations. OP spoke of needing a small operation as well so perhaps has quite complicated needs compared to others and therefore treatment is more expensive, because it takes longer and may need several different types of brace.
