To put some flesh on the bones, unemployment falls by 8,000 to 2.47 million and the claimant count rose by 2,300. The numbers are flat, hardly good news.
Real wages fell as the annual rate of pay rose by 1.5% including bonuses :-(.
The good news is the employment rate rose among over 18s by 0.4%. Also, the private sector is easily soaking up job losses in the public sector so far as 22,000 (of 6,050,000) public sector jobs were lost and 308,000 private sector jobs were added, net in the past 3 months.

Now that is good news. Long may it continue.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

The unemployment figures have stagnated around 2.47 million for 3-6 months now. The differences have been, as Generali has highlighted, miniscule. A couple of thousand either way each month.
The thread title - & the headlines we've seen in the last 3-6 months have been misleading/disingenuous tbh. They should be more along the lines of "Unemployment stagnates at 2.47 million".
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

that was before the new governments cuts had time to take their toll. labour was nurturing a tenetative recovery / survival. i don't think the same can be said for what is happening now. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

You can't use stagnation, if it moves by one it can't be stagnation. You will be told by someone very soon.
(I agree stagnant

i found this bit quite interesting....hardly the flood of immigrants stealing our jobs that some would like to believe in.
The number of UK born people in employment (not seasonally adjusted) was 25.08 million in theon a year earlier.
three months to June 2010, down 15,000 on a year earlier. The number of non-UK born people in
employment (not seasonally adjusted) was 3.85 million, up 114,000 from a year earlier.
The employment rate for UK born people aged from 16 to 64 (not seasonally adjusted) was 70.9 per
cent in the three months to June 2010, down 0.5 percentage points on a year earlier. The
corresponding employment rate for non-UK born people was 66.5 per cent, up 0.5 percentage points

Yes only 3.85 million. A mere drop in the ocean.0 -

Slightly off topic, but you're pretty knowledgable about these things Generali. I was wondering how much of a 'real' pay cut it is to not have a pay rise for the past 3 years? This is the case for me and around 5 of my colleagues.
Say we are being paid £20 an hour if a figure is required.0 -
Expectations were a fall of 40,000 off the unemployed figures.
8,000 is no where near that, which is rather worrying. The fall in unemployment was below the drop of about 40,000 which observers had expected.
"The labour market data is both disappointing and worrying overall, fuelling fears that the improvement in the labour market is coming to an end as companies' fears mount over the strength and sustainability of the upturn," said Howard Archer, chief UK and European economist at Global Insight.
"This is even before public sector job cutting really gets underway."
Bloody toffs
