Has anyone ever looked at the meat content of any brand of cat food pouch?
Our vet pointed out that they only had 4 per cent meat, and when I checked this was true. It didnt make me buy the product she was trying to flog though.
Lately I have been treating my cat to a tin of value tuna (29p Tescos) once a week, drain the brine off though. It does two meals, so is as cheap as a pouch anyway. I dont give it more often in case the salt is bad for her, but she loves it. ALso the manky bits off a roast chicken when available. And recently have tried Iams which is 29% meat, she liked that. Still give pouches in between, have tried tinned but basically to get the kids to feed her it has to be pouches.
  • Mmmmmm1 I usually stock up on these when they're cheap and then eat them when i run out of real food or as a pleasent snack at the cinema. the little pousches are so handy.

Good idea clowance. I have thought of that but have not look into the cost of it compared to pouches. I had an idea that the pouches contained small percentage of meat, but 4% is very low.

Going to try finding cheapest own brand tunas and the likes and maybe mix it with the pouches or give it to the cat on its own so its 100% meat.

Interesting. They are supposed to do so much quality testing on pet food it is supposed to be better qualitiy than human food.

I have just checked the Morrisons can of My Cat, Cod and Prawn from the cupboard and it says 4% cod and 4% prawn so that must be 8% meat?

What is the right percentage anyway? Too much protein in their diets must be as bad for them as it is for humans - dietetes, obesity etc.

I like thidea of a can of ordinary tuna but I would rinde the salt water off as much as I could.

Also if we have a cooked chicken the cats have the skin and fat bits as a treat.

I dont buy pouches often but thye are useful in the summer because an open can soon goes whiffy. The kids though refuse to squeeza and scrap them out properly and there are half used sachets all over the place. Plus I think there must be something in them, the cats go wild when I get sachets out!

I suppose it is a case of plenty of variety will keep them the healthiest.

I'm not an expert on this but just wanted to highlight that it is potentially not a good idea to feed your cat a lot of tinned tuna - do a search on google to find more info. Potential problems include "yellow fat disease" due to a lack of Vitamin E; mineral deficiencies; and excessive amounts of mercury.
