experian- breaking a financial link

Options
sorry, not sure which board this should be on. I had an experian check carried out on my name and all was ok except for a financial link due to a joint bank account with OH. This account has now been closed and due to possible bad debts links with my Oh want to try to erase this link. I checked out the booklet which came with the report and it seems I have to contact experian telling them why i shouldnt be financially linked which is fine. Thing is do I just say ' the joint bank account is closed' or should i say something like 'the joint account is closed and say we are seperated' (we arnt I just wonder if they need a reason for the svered link? will it be enough to say I dont want to be financially linked although we are married

just tell them the bank a/c is closed.
you are allowed to live with people with bad debts without it being on your credit file
  • Just tell them that you are now separated, that the account is closed, and that you have no other joint accounts or financial associations.
You'll need to do the same with CallCredit and Equifax as well. It's probably worth sending the £2 to each of them for a statutory report (Don't waste money doing it on-line). You can then check for any other financial links from joint searches etc.
  • thnaks everyone. will do that today
  • Hi, if you don't have any joy just writing in let me know and as a member I will ask them a hypothetical question. I pay an annual fee and they email me if anyone runs a check on anyone in the household so I can see if it is genuine.
  • Not sure anymore!! contacted Experian and looked at their web site. If someone has been financially linked there is a form to fill in. It has questions like, do you have a joint bank account, do you have joint mortgage, do you have any joint finances which I can answer No to. Then it asks 'is the person still at your address' if i answer yes to this then it says i must explain why I want to be dissasociated with them and if they see fit they will grant it to me. I also have to get him to sign as well to say he doesnt mind being dissasociated. He will sign if i ask but if I just leave it will the fact the account has been closed be picked up say in 6 months time or do I have to actually tell them and the other s as well?
  • Sorry I misread your first post.
While you need to show that you no longer have any financial association by confirming that you have no joint a/cs etc. I don't believe that you are obliged to obtain the other party's agreement to such dis-association just because you live in the same house.
Tell them you've chosen to live independently from a financial perspective.
Unless you get the link removed, it will stay there even when the account is long closed.
  • It doesn't matter if the person lives with or is married to you. It is purely down to your financial links. I can't see anything wrong with giving the reason for disassociation as your OH's credit history isn't so hot & you don't want this impacting on your credit worthiness. Just make sure that every joint account that you've had (Bank, loan, CC etc) is definitely marked as satisfied on your credit file.

experian's request doesn't seem unreasonable to me. formally you were jointly and severally responsible for debts (or potential debts ) so it doesn't seem wrong to check with the other party that they are now solely responsible for any such debts (i know of course you dont have any ).

i would simply say that ALL joint accounts or debts are closed and so there is no financial links anymore (presumably all utilities, rent/mortgage etc are not in joint names )..remember that experian dont know about all your a/cs ..only those on their files.
