02 debt written off?

Options
Hi everyone

I owed O2 £174.92 from about 3 years back (when my phone bill was set up on a Student account which reached it's limit, I didn't notice and they cut me off for non payment). I contacted them back in January to say 'I owe you money, can I pay it monthly" and they replied in March saying "phone us, we'll sort something". I did this, paid £20 and promised to ring back and pay the rest at a later point.

I was planning on clearing it with my old rental deposit, which i've just been paid. Wrote to them last week to check the balance owed was £154.92, and asking where to send the cheque. They wrote back yesterday saying the balance on the account is Zero as the debt has, as of the 16th of September, been written off.

So i owe them nothing? Will this come back and bite me later, or appear on my credit file at a later point? I've kept them informed of my address etc, they haven't chased the debt at all and i've long since gone Orange.
I don't want to consider it gone if later it'll come back....

Could someone reassure me please? x

If they have sent you a letter stating that the debt has been written off, then the debt has been written off and they, or anyone else, should not chase you in the future.
Make sure you keep the letter, though, just in case some 'bounty hunting' DCA has been trawling O2 records.
    Also worth checking your creditfile.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

Thank you Rog! Am half tempted to frame it - lovely to have letters stating a balance of zero!

The phone was originally in my Mums name, so I think it'd be her credit file that would have problems rather than mine. It was not on mine as of this July, so fingers crossed it will not appear at all. Will get my ma to check too :( x
  • Hi

I can only echo what rog2 said. Check your credit file... However other than that, there isn't much you can do. I would keep the letter (and/or make a copy of it) in a safe place, just incase o2 or a debt collection agency contact you in the future, I doubt it will happen though.
