Bah, pesky direct debits/my brain!

Hmph. On Sunday I was looking at my spreadsheet and realised that if all my direct debits and other payments went out on Monday, I would go over the limit on my Smile account. I panicked a bit and called Egg who said that they couldn't cancel the £227 debit card payment I had made, but suggested I cancel the direct debit payment (then set it back up again, obv). I went onto Smile internet banking and did this, and it said that if it was done before 8pm on the day the payment went out, it would be cancelled. Well, guess what? It went out.
Luckily, I had completely messed up my spreadsheet and counted the rent standing order twice, so the Egg DD of £150 was fine, so I left it. This morning I go to check my accounts and my new co-op bog standard current account (which I opened so as to make it easier to clear the Smile overdraft, as I am rubbish at not using available OD, but quite good at making payments off things, so I'm paying off £60 a month and reducing the limit by £60) was overdrawn by £17.30! Because I had got my dates mixed up and the council tax has gone out today, not the 1st of October. There's another payment of £13 due to go out today, so I had to hurriedly transfer some money from Smile. The nice lady on the phone at the co-op said I won't be charged as the money is there now, but I shall call back later to check...
Mind you, overall DDs are great for me as I have ADD and am utterly useless at making payments any way other than automatically. I have one bill that I pay manually and that's as much as I can manage!
