Responsible lending????????? Scandal!

Options
I was speaking to a very good friend last night who never uses credit cards and is very good with money. She has an 18 yr old daughter who is at Uni, (no student loans!) and no income.
She went into La Senza and was "sweet talked" into getting a La Senza card as it would save her £5.
When the assistant was filling in the form and she asked about income, my friend's daughter was quite honest and said she didn't have one. However, she does have a bank account and a bank card. So she walked out of the shop with a credit limit for £2000:eek:
Unbelievable.
When the documentation arrived from the CC Company requesting more details of her income, my friend noticed that the shop assistant had ticked "other" in the income bit.
Needless to say, her Mum cut up the card and instructed her daughter to write and close the account.

It happens all the time - it's sooooo important the consumer is aware that what seems like a great deal "getting goods on a card & paying for them later" so often ends up in them paying hundreds over the original price.

But the companies are not going to tell customers this are they - its even more important we teach our children to use Credit Cards correctly or ideally not at all.

Don't have a credit card myself and I won't be getting one.
A debit card will do me just fine!
  • to save her a fiver she must have been spending 50 quid on knickers! I think she needs to be careful with an expensive lingerie habit (and the seams rub on la senza stuff - although the bags are very swanky...)
  • I just say 'no!' whenever they do it - I'm not interested in store credit at all, the interest is outrageous!
