Power Cut ! Help

Options
Please could anyone give me some advice ! We had a power cut yesterday evening, everything was completely off for over 4 hours. I didn't open the freezer, only opened the fridge once (there is some mince there useby date today). Do you think everything will be ok ? I checked the freezer after everything was back on & nothing seemed to have defrosted, but not so sure about the fridge. DH says I'm fussing, can you help ? Thanks

  • The freezer's unlikely to be a problem. There'll have been very little, if any defrosting.

As to the fridge, it'll probably be fine. Take a look (and a smell) of what's in there. Does it seem OK to you? I'd probably use stuff from the fridge, but not give it to small children, the elderly, or anyone else who's not on top form.

Cook the mince thoroughly, and I'm sure there'll be no problem.

  • Thanks for that. I was going to use the mince last night for shepherd pie, but will use tonight instead. The useby date's today & its already started to look brown so I may well have a sniff when I open it just in case ! I have 2 kids, 6 & 4, the 4 yo has asthma & tends to be a bit sensitive so I may err on the side of caution !! Thanks for that. I tell you what we were all OS last night with all our candles on !!!!
  • So long as your freezer was closed, am sure all will be okay there. As for your fridge, even though it was off, would still have been cold for a good while. Your mince will be fine - just cook it today. Then you can freeze it, if you can't use it today. You don't have to do much - just brown it, with or without onions, let it cool, then freeze.
Am sure that everything else in the fridge is fine. All your jars of stuff should be fine. Cheese and butter will be good, but use them sooner, rather than later - and don't freeze them again.
