costco vs supermarket own brands ?

Most supermarket own brands are cheaper than costco for tinned goods etc.
I have found good buys to be toilet rolls, herbs, spices, catering disposables (foil trays etc), birthday cakes, eggs, vitamins, tins of coffee,5lb packs of bacon, black puddings and most fresh meat. Often price of meat is comparable to supermarkets but in my costco the quality is much better.
The gift packs are great at xmas time, and outdoor toys ,garden furniture is usually a good buy in summer. You can easily save the cost of the card on one big purchase.

I've been wondering about joining for the last couple of months and havent yet gotten around to it. Then, strangley, went to a PTA AGM on tuesday night and was told that the school is a member of costco and consequently any parent that wants to join can do so for a £10 fee!!!!:T Might be worth checking if your kids school is a member??WW Start Weight 18/04/12 = 19st 11lbsWeight today = 17st 6.5lbsLoss to date 32.5lbs!!!0 -
i second that, sophiesmum. I last year I bought a bathroom cabinet in there for about £50 - I wasn't even in there looking for one, but I needed one and forgot they did stuff like that. Afterwards I saw one in John Lewis exactly the same for £179. I was so pleased with myself. I also use them for loo rools and kitchen rolls. We basically buy a years supply when they come in the passport. I find their diet coke trays of 24 are about £1.50 cheaper than the supermarket and the coke cheaper still. I have heard it said that you will get your £30 back just by buying two new tyres but I have no idea how much tyres cost so cannot verify that!0

Our Costco has an opticians and the designer label specs are good value. Also we found it was the cheapest place for tyres, good quality ones. I also love their fish and meat and bakery stuff.0

pollyanna24 wrote:I know some of the stuff in there is cheap and others not so cheap, but I was in there last night and made a note of the price of the meat that I would buy by the kg, just so I could try and compare with Tesco.
Braising steak - £6.49 per kg
Beef mince - £3.99 per kg
Leg of lamb - £7.79 per kg
I also saw their 1kg tins of coffee for £15.99.
Are these prices better than Tesco or should I not bother. Haven't actually bought any meat or coffee as budget for food is up this month and have to wait till 1st October.:smileyhea0 -
I second the quality is better - particularly the meats, but the pasta is yummy too - cheap supermarket pasta isn't worth eating....Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

A quick question for Costco members. Am FINALLY joining on friday. I am wondering..............does every Costco sell the same stuff?? The reason I ask is I was wondering if any of you could point me in the direction of any fabbo deals they have at the moment. Would be handy to know in advance so I know what to keep an eye out for.
Thx,

Hi kiwichick,
As it's dropped off the front page of Old Style I'll move this thread over to the Shop but Don't Drop board to see if you can get an answer there.

Some Costco positives:
TYRES!!!!! Get the cheap brand unless you need Michelin. The cheapo brand was so successful they had to be bought out by Michelin.
PASSPORT deals. They usually start about September time.
ONLINE VOUCHERS. If you register on their site, they send you vouchers that you can print off and use in store.
CAFETERIA. This offers real VFM. Large baked potatoes with as many toppings as you want for £1.25. Big smoothies for £1.15 and frozen yoghurt for £1.00. Great for an occasional lunchtime visit!
ELECTRICAL GOODS. All come with a free 3 year parts and labour guarantee....and then the window licker said to me...0
