Checks done by employer/third party companies before commecning employment

I am accepted for a new job, which starts next month. The offer is 'conditional', as checks needs to be done. After that, if the checks are fine, I will get the final offer, and a contract will be sent to be signed.

How long do these checks take usually? I'm not sure if the employer will be conducting the checks, or a third party company specialising in employee checks?

Could employers and educational institutions refuse to give the employer or third party companies ? :o

I'm worried that if employers and educational institutions refuse to verify (or even delay the time to verify) the details I gave on my CV, my start date will be delayed, or even my job offer withdrawn by the company....

Your views appreciated.

Unless you know WHAT checks are being carried out, I'm afraid no-one can help at all.

Even if you know, for example, that they include a CRB and two references, all anyone can do is say that atm straightforward CRBs seem to be taking X weeks. But no-one can say how long it will take your referees to respond to any requests: we sent out requests near the end of August for one post, and the responses are only arriving now, after chasing.

What sort of employer is it? That might help us.

I know what checks they will be doing. It's a financial institution (Direct Line Insurance).

I've checked my emails that they sent before attending the interview. It says when a verbal offer is made, checks will be done by a third party (The Security Watchdog), on behalf of the company (the third party company will contact me by email with a link to a form to fill in).

I haven't received this email yet. Employer called me last Monday that I got the job.

Should I be worried? Should I wait for another 1-2 weeks before chasing it up? Should I assume the employer is now doing the checks, instead of the third party (i.e. change of plan by the employer)?

I'd phone and check. It's possible they sent the wrong email address to the checking company ... or something daft like that!

    Update

Gave them a call. No one answered. :( Not even a voice message...

When they called, they didn't say anything about checks done by a third party, or anything like that, but on the email they sent before the interview says a third party will do checks on behalf of the insurance company. Well confusing.

Is it worth calling the Security Watchdog who conducts the check on behalf of the company? They are the one who will send the link...

My start date is 3-4 weeks time, it's getting near and nothing has been done. I don't want the company to assume that I failed the check, or don't want the job anymore... (

I think Id be tempted to call the new employer again on Monday, or email if you have the address as you first posted on the 13th so itll be a fortnight. Maybe just ask if they need any further info from you; is everything going ok sort of thing.... I know its nerve racking, Im awaiting checks too.... Good luck.
