Error with name differences on passport/bank statement advice/vent argh!

Hi everyone

My partner is in the process of getting a property. They have asked for a copy of his bank statements/passport.

He has quite a long name and for some reason, the name on his passport differs from the name on his bank statements. Now origionally, we thought the name on his passport was the incorrect one (spelling error, 1 letter).

The soliciters/bank have re done the credit score on the name on the passport and it has now come out lower than the one on the bank statement

Since then, we have found his birth certificate and found that actually, the name on the bank statements were incorrect and the name on the passport was correct. Our mortgage broker is saying that although she can tell the bank of the error on the banks part, the credit score may still come out lower.

Argh! I am very annoyed and frustrated as I don't know whether to tell my partner to just change his passport (Which will cost us and also hold up the process) or tell the bank they made the error and risk the credit score being lower than what we initially thought it would be. (although I remember we did inform them of the error in November last year, they said they would change it to the name on the passport but never did)

Any advice? Thanks

Birth certificate and passport should match.

You should get bank statements changed to the correct format.

Your broker needs to discuss the situation with the lender and come back with a way forward really.

  • The birth certificate and passport do match. However, we didnt know that they matched until this weekend (He thought he had lost his birth certificate but infact his mum had misplaced it and managed to find it again)

The bank statement is infact the only thing that did not match. I did inform the bank in November last year that they did not match and they did say they would change it. (They haven't as of yet)

The lender is actually the same people my partner banks with!

So i thought it wouldnt be that much of a problem. But if the credit score does go down, it would mean we would have to put more into the deposit, which we cannot afford!
