Potato panic

I've had a much better year with my clay ridden garden. I did well with potato's staggering the planting times, Yields were variable with the early ones giving a lot of small potato's and the middle group giving plenty of mid sizers for about a kilo per plant.
Well I've just dug up the last patch and I'm not happy. Yield was lousy with mostly one big one and a few little ones. More worrying was the fact that many of them were covered in small white spots. Does anyone know what that might be? I know we had that real wet spell that caused a lot of crop problems but it could be some desease. If it makes a difference I had onion sets there up till july.
I also noticed quite a few had holes in. Virtually the last one I dug up had a wormy looking thing with its head wedged in it and it was happily chomping a big hole inside. Anyone have any idea what that is and if its a problem or not?
Regards

My father always had worms in his potatos until I told him not to use manure under them but to try potash or fish blood and bone, they now come up a treat and aren't riddled with so many holes you have to cut most of them away.I had a plan..........its here somewhere.0
