bridesmaids curls - help!

Options
Hi everyone, hoping someone can help us!

I went for a hair trial with one of my bridesmaids today. My hair is perfect, but she came out looking like she'd been dragged through a hedge backwards... not really the look we were going for. We wanted a fairly classic soft curl - we took this picture to show them the sort of thing we wanted http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4QlGBCJKJE0/Spk9UqJBCmI/AAAAAAAAAVA/_t8NZ38Px6k/bridesmaid_hairstyles.jpg

When I initially spoke to them, I asked about having it done with straighteners and they were adamant that it would drop out and look rubbish with straighteners, and that a shampoo and set was the way to go. She went for the shampoo and set this morning, and the hair all looks greasy and the curls dropped out within an hour - I really begrudge spending £30 on a hairstyle that looks such a mess for the wedding!!!

So my question to you really is - if you've had this sort of style done for yourself or your bridesmaids, how was it done and how well did it stay in? We're considering doing it ourselves now to save the money because the shampoo and set definitely isn't worth it.

my hair lady used straighteners, she has all the different thickness of GHD's to get the correct look. She actually said straighteners were best for curling hair!
Both my BMS got thier hair curled with GHD's at about 6pm and both got up the next morning and although messy the curls were still in.:)

  • I agree that using straighteners with some hairspray to set them is fine! There is a technique to gettings the curls just right so I would say have a few gos trying it out before hand incase you are unable to get it right (I cant do it!)

My bros gf always puts her hair in loose curls and uses a £30 set of heated rollers from Argos, and hers always last till the next day (ie when she wakes up hungover hahaha) so maybe this could be an alternative option?

I think if the hairdresser was so confident that would be the best technique and they failed so well that hair straighteners are not guaranteed either. Is your maid's hair particularly flat/straight??
    I love surprises!
  • Hi
My daughter has fine thick hair and always has trouble keeping curls in. When she was a bridesmaid I took her for a trial run and the hairdresser curled hers with straightners when we got home the curls had dropped out. I asked my friend who is a hairdresser for adivse she rag rolled her hair with tights. The night before we cut up cheap tights and she rag rolled her hair and she slept with a pair of pants on her head. The next day the curls were still in and lasted all day and night. The morning after the wedding she woke up with curls still there. No other curlers/tong/straighners have curled her hair so well. Just a little tip if you are curling your hair do not straighten it before curling as it is harder to curl.

  • Thanks guys, i don't think that rag rolling would work because that's essentially what the shampoo and set was, and they had dropped out immediately :(

maggie i am a bit concerned about that which is why i was wondering what other peoples experiences have been! Her hair is naturally wavy and has a lot of volume but doesn't hold curls in well, although she has previously had it curled with curling tongs and sprayed to within an inch of its life, and that stayed in through to the next morning and looked gorgeous so I know it's possible, but unfortunately we're 100 miles from that hairdresser!

I really don't want to spend a fortune on hair trials (especially as she doesn't live locally to me and has travelled for this trial especially, it will have to be me who has trials for her in future which i know isn't perfect as we have different hair! but todays was horrible! Total waste of money!)

Our plan is to curl it ourselves tomorrow and really spray it, and see if that will hold - if it does hold then we'll stick with that (very MSE lol) but if not then I'm a bit stumped :(

There is also another bridesmaid to factor in, but she lives 200 miles away so there will be no hair trials for her!

We're toying with the idea of just putting a few curls in around the front and allowing the rest to lie straight, it would look a lot better than todays effort!

    Thanks for your help!
  • my hair was curled for my wedding with straightners and to be honest it was crap!!it was done at 11am and before my 2pm wedding my chief bridesmaid was trying to hide and groom the straight bits!
curling tongs are the only thing that work for me.
once you get the hang of it its really not that hard to do yourself and if i can do it anyone can!
just remember to keep the sections small and divide the hair itself into sections before you start...maybe have a little practice and see how you go...also have you actually asked the hairdresser to use tongs
    xx
  • I hate to say this but if her hair is like mine (naturally has a wave to it but the top lays straight) I can't curl mine for anyone! No amount of spray will hold it! My hair is so heavy that it just falls out! I have the same problem with straightening it - I have a stubborn patch that will not go under and within an hour it will have a lovely kink! Hoping my cousin can work wonders with mine! I would suggest she either asks advice form a local hairdresser to her who will point her in the right direction! She can then practice herself! I have asked my hairdresser (who is a hundred miles away from my home) and she has given me some tips with how to keep my hair in control!
  • Some people seem to get brilliant curls with straighteners, but i just can't do it at all! i've watched countless youtube videos on it and clearly don't have the technique!!! curling tongs is a possibility, but i find that i burn myself often on them and my bridesmaid says the same so not sure that doing two heads of curls is a good plan!!!

This morning we've had a little go and it's all looking a bit pants, so we may well be going for straight and sleek with the front part twisted around and pinned at the back, which looks nice and is very simple.. We had big flowers for their hair, made out of feathers, they sound a bit weird but they are gorgeous, but wth straight hair it just doesn't really work because they're too big whereas with the big volume of curls it would have looked really nice. Now I'm a bit stuck as to what to do about hair accessories or whether to leave it.. spent a lot of money on the feathery things bceause they were so nice and a bit gutted that we just can't get them to look nice :(

i have asked the hairdressers about all the ways of curling, and each hairdresser gave me a different answer about which would work the best. I picked the one I liked the best, and who I was most confident about doing the style I want, but unfortunately it's a different hairdresser at the same salon who would be doing the bridesmaids and she seems like a mardy moo as well as making a big mess of my sisters hair... so to be honest i feel like i'm better just to cut my losses and cancel theirs completely, and just get mine done. it's a shame though, i was looking forward to the whole experience of getting it all done together!

thanks everyone for your help :)

I had mine done at 3pm yesterday and it's still in now :o I'm too rough to comb it out let alone wash it

She used some product, curled it with tongues and then sprayed it with hair spray (feels stiff but doesn't look it)

I had my haircut on Friday and my hairdresser styled it in curls, I'd only walked around the corner and they had all dropped and by the time I got home only the ones near the bottom were left :(

  • Where abouts are you???

Another tip I was given it to not wash my hair a few days before because it holds better, she told me to wash it Thurday and then it will be better for her to my hair on the Saturday when we get married :D
