  • I gave up shower gel as it is a rip off. I found that olive oil soap from Holland and Barrett. It is about £1.80 a bar  BUT it doesnt irritate my skin and I have very bad eczema. It lasts a hell of a lot longer than shower gel

I remember nostalgically the smell of carbolic soap, the red stuff. I am sure our mother used to use it on us, in a tin bath in front of the fire. How I loved that smell, but you dont see it around much. I remember someone saying it was really good for the skin.

Oh, yeah... regarding soap lasting a long time... if you let it dry out, it will last longer.

My maternal grandmother was a miser. As in, the obsessive-compulsive kind. Anyway, she filled up a four-story apartment building she owned with stuff she'd stockpiled. One of these was a BARREL of bar soap. All different brands, obviously bought on sale over the years.

After she died, my mom didn't have to buy soap for nearly 10 years. Not only did we just have a ton of the stuff, but the bars had dried out. That meant they lasted longer.

I haven't done it, myself. But, if I were to buy maybe 100 bars of the Tesco soap for £19, and I kept them in a box in the bottom of the airing closet, they'd probaby dry out in a few years and then they'd absolutely last at least two or three times as long. Plus, you'd be beating inflation.

I've always kept my stock of soap bars in the airing cupboard cos the heat dries them out and makes them last longer. Don't know how I got into the habit - must have been my mum???

Here's a good money saving moisturising tip I got from my OH - Aqueous cream. It's about £1.50 for a half kilo tub of it and is possibly the best emollient I've ever come across.

After you've washed (be-it in the shower or bath), rub some all over your skin; arms, legs, chest, shoulders etc... then rinse it off, get out and dry off as normal. It leaves a coating on your skin just the same as baby oil does once it dries and locks in moisture but is a darn site cheaper than any moisturiser or lotion and is suitable for sensitive skin too.

I'm a fan of good old soap too (o:

Same effect if you don't dry yourself after a shower but first spray on some skin oil - it's better applied to wet skin than dry skin. I'm terribly allergic to Johnson's Baby Oil so use Sanctuary Almond Oil (buy it on offer and stockpile it) each day. It's lovely and skin is well moisturised. Now I will get a tub of the Aqueous cream and try that instead. Thanks!
  • I am soap fan too!

I like to buy Dove - yeah it is more expensive but I do find that it doesn't dry my skin and it smells lovely. I usually get it in a 4 pack from Wilkinsons or BOGOF. So much better value than shower gel!

I know I am a bit wierd but I don't like the idea of soap in a shower because someone else has used it on their 'bits' also finding a pubic hair on a bar of soap makes me feel a bit queasy!! (even if I know it's from my OH!!)

    PMSL:rotfl: @ Furrypig

Surely you come into close contact with OH's short 'n' curlies from time to time by means other than shared soap:eek:

My OH goes away on business a few times a year, he saves the shower gels and soaps etc and thats what I use in the shower. The soaps last for ages, I can't remember the time I last had to buy any.

Might try that aqueous cream thing as I do have to moisturise afterwards

theres a way of making it last longer still: use one of the puffy mesh things, and you get an incredable amount of lather from the tiniest amount of soap :money:

a little interesting sciency bit for you here.....

there are detergents / surfactants which are used in shower gels, hand cleaners etc that are used to clean...but there are also surfactants which are there primarily to foam more than standard surfactants...so it makes it look like there is more "active ingredients" in the product.
