I don't think anyone has been harsh, apart from possibly one comment. There's no point in encouraging the OP to wallow in self pity or continue along the route of "oh woe is me". Realistic pro-active advice is always more useful than tea and sympathy.
  • I didnt think i was being harsh. i was simply explaining my own experiences. However i do agree with the fact that it is not the OPs problem if her colleagues choose not to stick up for themselves.
  • I have always worked shifts and nights . I must admit they are my fave shift! However, some of my friends who are on Mon-Fri-9-5 type of jobs would just not cope with them I am sure!
My fave part is getting into my bed after a night shift after seeing most other people trotting off to work.....................
OP I am sure you will cope! Theres alot worse things you could be doing!
  • Googlewacker if i had had my way i would not only have put up that sign "Night worker sleeping. Disturb at your own risk" i would have laminated it as well.:D
  • I actually used to prefer nightshifts to days, because the bosses were never around, the phone wasn't constantly ringing, you could have an extra 5 (ok, 15!) minutes on your tea break, and that feeling of getting into bed at 8am knowing that everyone else was getting up was great!

The good thing about night shifts is that you can get your own back on noisy neighbours.

Fire up your lawnmower at 7AM on a Sunday morning after coming off nights and see how they like their sleep disturbed.

I think the OP must check her employment contract, as they normall have a clause satating that night work may be required depending on the needs of the company.

Though a lot of employment contracts tend to get a bit vague when actually describing on what would be termed a reasonable amount of notice for a shift change.

Ceridwan is right, if it isn't in your contract then don't do it, the only caveat with this is that you may be unofficially labelled a pain by management and have problems later on, this does happen, remember it may be great being technically and even legally correct, but at the expence of loss of career progression and statements like "not a team player" being spoken by your managers behind closed doors.

Everything in life contains an element of compromise, that is something that you will have to get used to.

When we where given a pay adjustment after A4C there where all sorts of little tricks that where put into the contract to allow HR and management to pretty much do what they wanted, obviously when i pointed this out I was called a winger and moaner, these same staff then came back to me moaning when they got shafted by some of these clauses.

Actually if it was a straight choice between being labelled "a pain" and "not a team player" personally I'd just take the attitude "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me".

Given the choice between being badmouthed unjustifiably or getting a good nights sleep = no contest - the good nights sleep would win every time:D
