Signing on Jobseekers but I have a job offer?

Options
Hi guys

Can I still sign onto Jobseekers if I have been given a job offer? I don't know when my start date is and subject to background checks the offer can be withdraw any time.

I initially didn't want to sign on but now I'm struggling with the rent n stuff and having no income is definitely a problem.

I don't know how I'm going to deal with the job hunting part because I don't want to be accepting interviews and then saying to employers that 'oh by the way I do have an offer.'

Can anyone advise?

  • Sign on but tell them you have job offer subject to back ground check, at least put in a claim first.

To claim JSA with a job offer you need to be willing to accept a temporary job until it comes through.

  • I asked about this at my jobcentre when I signed on. Basically, I was told that you can still claim JSA until your job starts - but you still have to go through the pretence of looking for work. I know it sounds silly, but that's apparently how it works!
I don't think people would mind if you were offered an interview and you said, "sorry, I've been offered another job." At the end of the day, they've always got lots of other candidates that they can call.
  • The condition of receiving JSA is that you are available to work and are actively seeking employment. You don't need to tell any employer should you get an interview that you have been provisionally offered anything.

Start your claim asap and get help with your rent and C Tax.

Good luck and I hope you get a firm offer from your new employer soon.

One piece of advice I got when I signed on last Friday and informed the guy I had a start date for a new job was "Do not sign-off until you have turned-up on your first date and signed all the paperwork".

  • When I finished uni, I got a job straight away, but it didn't start until 10-12 weeks after being told I'd got the job. I signed up to a few temp agencies - didn't mention about my job and signed up. About 10 days before starting work, I mentioned about the job at the last sign on.

This was 7 years ago btw.
