Are odd-shaped vegetables available?

Hi

Sorry if this has been covered (many times) before.

I recall a while ago, the EU 'legalised' the sale of various odd shaped vegetables. We were told the supermarkets would sell these, as well as their aesthetically perfect equivalents, but obviously at a discount.

Whatever happened to this? I haven't seen them for sale anywhere! Maybe I am looking in the wrong place?

Thanks

  • I'd assume that's what Sainsburys basics and other supermarkets value ranges are.

Often on things like Sainsburys basics strawberries, peppers etc it'll say "different sizes, just as good!"
  • Yes, I think they are the value ranges in the supermarkets.

I got some funny shaped carrots from Sainsbury's last week, in the basics bag.

One looked like an ordinary carrots with warts, another was like a pair of legs with a dodgy looking tuft in the middle. I'd have sent it in to Cyril on "That's Life" if it was still on air...:rotfl:

It's right that the EU "legalised" the sale of odd shaped vegetables, but that just means supermarkets can sell them if they want to.

I think the supermarkets would still go for the standard shaped ones, when ever they could, as they can charge more for those. You may find odd shaped veg in markets and small independent shops, as they will want to keep their prices down.
  • they had that advert about tesco value mushrooms being odd shapes and sizes, although they are not rreally that odd imo
