Hello
Finally getting my debt nightmare sorted . Have opened a Co-Op Cashminder a/c, Payplan are ringing me on Friday, & i have goy a Cashplus mastercard.
However, i do not want to be harrassed at home with phonecalls from creditors so i was thinking of changing my home number & going Xdirectory. I am quite willing to deal with any creditors by e-mail, post, & even give my mobile number. I will also be giving any new number to Payplan & my employer. However, do i have to give the new number to my bank & if i do will they give it to my creditors if they are contacted.
Also i have rcently renewed some insurance on the phone & they asked for a landline number. Cashplus also did this
when i phoned them with a query. I just gave them my existing number . Am i legally obliged to give them a landline number, can they refuse to provide goods & services if i refuse to givea landline number.
Also am i right in thinking that firms like this only want the number to sell on to marketing companies.
Thanks

Firstly, well done for getting your affairs in order. It is a huge step forward.
I was in a similar position only a few months ago and decided to keep my exisiting numbers. I had read a number of comments on this site where creditors had managed to obtain new telephone details which negated all the efforts made to keep this new number relatively private.
Calls from creditors are persistant and VERY frequent but do virtually cease after a couple of months, with only the odd call being received now.
It is embarrassing and annoying having to avoid answering the phone in your own house, particularly if you have children or visitors.
It really does get easier.

Some of the internet voice-over-IP services give you a telephone number that can be used for internet calls. If you are not calling out on it, you may not need to buy credit as it is only used for incoming calls. And no-one says you have to answer them! As far as I recall they use a UK format phone number0

I don't know where you'd stand regarding supplying 'a contact number', but think if legally I had to provide one I'd stick a free sim in an ancient mobile & give out that number instead - easy enough to ditch if the harrassment started up again.
I changed our landline back in February when calls from creditors were becoming absolutely unbearable, didn't hand out the new one & the calls have stopped completely.
I can honestly say it is the best £25 I have *ever* spent.

You have no legal obligation whatsoever to give out your telephone number. It is YOUR NUMBER and you may do with it as you please.
You also have the right to request, of any company, or individual, that any correspondence they wish to have with you is conducted in writing.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
