"Well if the rents are lowered by landlords of some of the boarded up shops, to attract in new businesses or start-ups.. there might be good competition and more potential for profit"

Why should it be the landlord who drops the price of their product to below what it costs them to provide it?

Slightly off tangent there Dev, but I agree - very annoying.
    Oh, I should have said.

I have to park to shop in these places they call high streets where I can't buy anything I actually want anyway.

If I didn't have to pay, I might go buy some stuff I probably don't want but looks like quite a bargain from Poundland.

I bought some of that stardrops cleaner from there once. I have no idea what to do with it. I just end up with a mass of bubbles. The stuff just hides the dirt in tangy smelling bubbles.

But I'll pop that one in the whinge bank for another time.

I agree. I'll go into a pound shop and come out with bags bulging with all sorts of rubbish that looked a bargain. Later on I'll think, what the heck do I do with all that! :D

What on earth are stardrops when they're at home?

One of the issues with town centre shops is poor stock control.

For example last year I needed to buy some summer clothes for work. So I went to two of the town centres near me who have a range of clothes shops. One only had stuff that was either really casual or for special occasions, and the other had clothes shops with empty racks. I actually went twice to both on different days over a 2 week period as I thought they were just out of stock. (I went on foot and used public transport. ) However in the end I ended up buying clothes from 2 large supermarkets and a retail park.

I spoke to another 2 women about a month later about the issue and they had the same problem.

They saw you coming as one bottle lasts ages as you only use a small amount.

The old style board has all the uses but I've used it for window cleaning and carpet cleaning.

I've NEVER used it to clean the bathroom.

Thanks for the offer, but no thanks. :D

(Having read olly's post, maybe it's ok.... it'd cost well over a pound to post it to me though.:))

For some landlords it's not going to cost that much to significantly lower the rent. Such as commercial property owners who own outright, not over-leveraged ect. 50% of the rent coming in is better than 12 months+ void.

Other commercial landlords will have badly positioned themselves and can't lower rents that much. It's not for another business to worry about what rent you need to tick over your business !

You can't save everyone from their own decisions, what they chose to borrow ect. If your business is commercial property,

If you don't lower rents, or such rents are below what you need to make your particular business plan tick by, another landlord will. Or it sits empty with no money coming in, or the bank takes if off your hands if there is debt on it. And probably, with ever more commercial property up to let and for sale, values fall.

    It's business.

Have it your way. Keep trying to hold potential shop businesses hostage to a certain rent, with all the other risks in challenging market shop environment, which loads the costs on them, and means they can barely turn a profit. Shop type businesses may/will look to alternative ways to run if they can't turn a profit in a leased shop. If you're in commercial property that is your business.
  • Maybe the EU will pay shopkeepers to keep their shops closed - just like the farmers are paid not to grow crops.

We can all complain about empty shops but the fact is that shoppers prefer supermarkets and t'Interweb. Business rates kill shops - and pubs.

It's time to redevelop the empty shops into viable businesses or homes.

We've got some too. From the Poundshop. That brand has been around ages hasn't it? Like since the 1950s.
