My guess for Japan is they may travel less for cultural reasons and also because there are less tourist destinations within a short (and therefore relatively cheap) flight distance.
it must also be to do with the fact that there is much less long-haul through-traffic as japan isn't really on the way to anywhere. UK must be influenced by the amount of through-traffic at heathrow in particular.0 -
