struggling with dress

I bought a lovely dress from a really nice lady second hand via small adds. Got it but sadly had to return it as it didn't fit despite trying to work out sizing with measurements. I think that wedding dresses are too complex to buy postal order unless you have a good returns policy? My lady is saying she is going to refund me. Its a shame becuase she thought she had sold her dress and I thought I'd got mine.
Has anyone else had these problems. I am so wary of buying from ebay. Some of the business sellers and definately the private sellers won't refund you and it is so easy to think you are going to get something that is going to work and yet it won't fit.
I am a size 18 (can't believe it!) and there aren't so many dresses around.
So I am going to look out for retail sales. Trying to get halter kneck or one with straps / arm covers if anyone sees any. ITs a december wedding...
any help much appreciated.

Could you not have kept the dress then spent a little bit more on getting it altered so it fitted perfectly?0

BHS wedding dresses are 20% off. Monsoon also sell size 18, as do Debenhams.
I personally would buy bigger than you intend, at least then you can get it taken in - depending on the dress you can reduce them 2-4 dress sizes!I love surprises!0 -

I thought about it but it wasn't really possible.0 -
Hi giddy...I feel your pain!! Being larger size myself and on tight budget, have struggled to find dress I like that fits well for right price!
I have to say I've hated dress shopping!! I have tried some lovely dresses on in Monsoon, don't know if you've looked there and the I decided I was going to buy one from ebay but then I seriously worried about the sizing/quality being ok.
I can't really offer advice as I've been lucky in that my mum used to be a professional seamstress (all be it many years ago) so after trying on different styles (and sizes) she has agreed to make my dress for me. I'm going Grecian style, empire line, so one of the easier styles to make and although time isn't on her side (wedding is also December!), she can pull it off (I hope!!).
Sorry I've not been much help but good luck in your searching!MARRIED MR E - 22nd Dec 2010 - technically now sazzye!:j

Also I would say that wedding dresses generally come up small so try and buy a size 20 (if you can) and if it's corsetted you should be pull it in to suit.
PS - I also Googled my dress to see it on some one plus size so I knew it suited my size before I bought it as well.I love surprises!0 -

roman originals do a cheap basic wedding dress for £800 -
We did give you loads of help trying to find a dress before and you said that you had got one from ebay?
There are loads of wedding dresses out there for size 18/20.
Without knowing what you're looking for, it's a bit difficult to help.
You are very lucky that the lady from the small ads is refunding you!!Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??:mad:Debt Free as of September 2011 :jSealed Pot 2009 number 334 - £100 Saved! yey!!Sealed Pot 2010 number 334 - £116.51 Saved! Yey!! YIPPEE!!0 -
yes I know I am lucky. I think what I am saying is that I personally feel it is quite risky using ebay and even small adds unless you can try the dress on. I feel that you can still risk a fair amount of money, you really need to try these dresses on in my opinion. Don't want anyone else to have my problem.0

You know that you can restrict you results on ebay to local listings? and then you have the opportunity to go and try on.Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??:mad:Debt Free as of September 2011 :jSealed Pot 2009 number 334 - £100 Saved! yey!!Sealed Pot 2010 number 334 - £116.51 Saved! Have you tried it on with the right underwear? A decent corset style thingy can make a HUGE difference (and HOT too!!) xsaving up another deposit as we've lost all our equity.
We're 29% of the way there...0
