Filling the side of a tooth

Hi

I need some advice. I've been to the dentist today and been told that I need some filling work done on the side of my molars. I've never had a filling before, so I have no idea what to expect anyway, but particularly with it being on the side of my teeth.

They have said they don't do gas, so I can choose to have no anaesthetic or local via needle. I have no idea what to go for and I have no idea what to expect. Will they use a drill? They willl use a white filling stuff, won't they? I don't want a lump of metal on the side of my tooth. If anybody has had this done themselves and has any advice for me, I'd much appreciate it.

Thanks

Gwenx

Hi Gwen, I've a rather large filling in a molar, it's on the biting surface as well as the side. It was done years ago and is a silver one.

It's that far back that you can't see it.

I also have a small filling that is at the top of my front top tooth, where the tooth meets the gum. That one is white or tooth coloured.
I had to have it replaced a couple of months ago, the needle is just a tiny nick and I didn't feel a thing whilst the work was being done.
They will use a little drill, which can be a bit noisy/whiny but with the anaesthetic, you won't feel any pain, probably just a slight pushing.
That part of your mouth may feel a bit strange as the anaesthetic wears off, but you will be fine.

  • Gwen, nobody on here can see your teeth, your x rays or any other part of your history. You need to ask YOUR dentist these questions, they are the only one who has the relevant information. We don't even know if you are having the treatment done on the NHS or privately.

    Thanks for your reply whatatwit.

coldstreamalways - I did ask my dentist these questions. He just said 'It'd be fine'. I think asking somebody else who's been through the same procedure what their experience was like is a totally reasonable question. Who better to ask that someone who's had it done? The only question I did forget to ask the dentist is what material they would use, but I thought other people might be able to say what their dentist used to give me an idea of what is typically used for these fillings.

I don't understand the importance of whether my treatment is NHS or private. I see plenty of other posts asking dental questions on here. Admittedly I don't read all of them, but I've yet to see anyone supply their x-rays. People reply with what help and advice they can offer, so I really don't see why people wouldn't do the same with my post.

If anybody else has had it done, I'd love to hear from you. It sounds like the anaesthetic injection isn't too painful, so I think I'll go for that.

I don't want a lump of metal on the side of my tooth. If anybody has had this done themselves and has any advice for me, I'd much appreciate it. They might have done but it's not much use if they have had a filling for a totally different reason to you.

    Thanks

*Reminding me why I shouldn't give people dental advice over the internet*

If YOUR dentist isn't giving YOU the information YOU want/need then you either need to ask ore questions or find a new dentist.

    Hope that helps:D
  • Gwen,
My daughter has had a small filling without any injection. She hates needles!
It really depends on how big it is and where it is. I would ask the dentist when you go back for advice about that.
You honestly dont want gas, I still have nightmares about that!
As was said before if it is in the back of your mouth no one will see it but you can pay extra to get a white one.
    Good luck!

Then I would say 'It'll be fine' as well! :D
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I've had 2 fillings (quite proud of that at 32!!) Both are white coloured. One i had done privately that cost a small fortune!! (£70) and one on NHS when on maternity and shouldn't have been free but as so small she did it for free! I had NO injection or anything else. Seriously if its only small my dentists both said its fine without injection. Both also said if it was really hurting then they'd give me an injection. Apart from a bit of nerve pain it was fine and no numb jaw after!! Make sure you check if it is white as not sure thats standard? Good luck. xxx

  • hello,

im not good a dentisits but i have had to have my two fillings replaced so i personally have went for white and paid the extra and i dont want the amalga ( sp ??) in my mouth. I have had one of the original fillings done without an injection before however this time they did have the injection for both as i had two appointments and had them done sep. My denist is really good knows how i feel about dentists and gave my gel on my gum for a wee mo to numb it a little so i didnt feel the needle and hey presto all done!!!

If your dentist id good they will explain everything, be patient and understnading if you are nervous, dentisits are used to nervous patients so you should be all good. As for the drills its more about the strange noise than feeling it really, :)

As far for the neg comments ignore them and dont worry about it, some folk just dont get the nerves and think sarcasim is the answer !

    hope this helps :)
